Smile Farms, Catholic Health open second cooperative garden
Following the success of the cooperative garden at Catholic Health’s Mercy Hospital Outpatient Behavioral Health Clinic in Garden City, the healthcare system has expanded its partnership with Smile Farms to create a larger cooperative garden at Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre.
Sponsored by the Town of Hempstead, the garden will be maintainted by patients in the Personalized Recovery Oriented Services (PROS) Program who will receive job training and payment, provided by Smile Farms funding. The produce will be shared with food-insecure individuals at Mercy Hospital’s Family Care Center in Rockville Centre.
More than 1,200 youth gather for We Are the Future Summit

Nonprofit civic and youth development organization Minority Millennials hosted its second annual We Are the Future Summit at Nassau Coliseum. Powered by Sands NY, the event featured panel sessions, and keynote presentations from thought leaders, elected officials and influencers. Additionally, the event showcased live performances by the 80-member Uniondale Marching Band & Steppers, Uniondale Jazz Band and Hempstead High School graduate Rising HipHop Star Chow Lee. This collaboration enables Minority Millennials to further its mission of empowering young people of color with access to jobs, wealth building and enhanced civic engagement.
Teri Alessi-Miceli honored as 2024 NYS Senate woman of distinction

Smithtown resident Terri Alessi-Miceli, president and CEO of HIA-LI, based in Hauppauge, was recognized with the New York State Senate Woman of Distinction Award. Alessi-Miceli was honored as an exemplary woman within New York State who has demonstrated outstanding professional or personal achievements and a steadfast commitment to excellence.
Each year, a select number of women receive this honor, positioning it a highly exclusive recognition. Alessi-Miceli was chosen by State Sen. Mario Mattera who lauded her ‘dedication to our community and her relentless pursuit of excellence and service.’
Five Towns College honors esteemed alumni with honorary degrees

During Five Towns College recent commencement exercises, Justice William G. Ford received the Doctor of Humane Letters, L.H.D. Ford is an associate justice of the appellate division, second department, and is a member of the second graduating class of Five Towns College in 1976 with an associate’s degree in jazz/commercial music while studying bass guitar. He later earned his B.A. From SUNY Empire State College.
Ford was first elected to the district court bench in 2008, served as acting county court judge from 2014-2015, and was elected to Supreme Court in the 10th Judicial District in 2015.
