MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) –Two Maryland men were sentenced last week for transporting thousands of fentanyl pills from California to Maryland in 2023.

The Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office said 27-year-old Malik Marin of Bowie and 27-year-old Tuflah Davies of Laurel pleaded guilty to possession of a large amount of fentanyl and both received the same sentence: 15 years in prison, with all but five years suspended.

On Dec. 6, 2023, the men traveled from Los Angeles, California, to Rockville, Maryland, on Amtrak with multiple bundles of pills wrapped in plastic.

During a traffic stop, a Montgomery County Police K9 alerted to the presence of narcotics inside their car, according to court documents. In a search of the car, officers found six large bundles wrapped in plastic with blue pills, weighing about 2.2 kg.

A test of the pills found were laced with fentanyl.

“Fentanyl is killing people in our county, the country and worldwide. The effort to address the flood of fentanyl into our community is one of the most important things we can do,” State’s Attorney John McCarthy stated, in part, in a press release.

After serving their sentences, Marin and Davies will serve five years of supervised probation.
