In 1954, James “Cornbread” Harris Jr. joined the Augie Garcia Quintet, which performed almost every night at the River Road Club in Mendota. Summer is coming to an end, but it’s not quite over yet. There is still time for next leg of the St. Croix Bassmaster Open, which kicked off Monday on Leech Lake in Walker. The weekend tournament was off to a great start with some beautiful skies to begin the day. Some sun, some clouds, and warm weather made for great fishing conditions as a crowd formed to watch the boats set off. But Leech Lake wasn’t taken over by any ordinary anglers.

Our most recent hike along Nine Mile Creek to the Minnesota River was last January. The nearly snowless non-winter we had then soon morphed into a very rainy Spring and summer. So much rain that the Minnesota River flooded the lower end of the path along Nine Mile. Plans to hike it went on hold.
