Retired school counselor and business owner Antoinette Harrison of Rocky Mount has another title to go by nowadays: co-author.

Harrison, 68, contributed to a collection of stories about motherhood titled, “Becoming the Shero: The Motherhood Mantle.”

The book celebrates the heroic nature of motherhood, Harrison said. She noted that she was excited to contribute to the project, when the lead author, Anissa Short, extended an invitation.

“I knew it was my opportunity to share my journey in motherhood and to help empower women through my story,” Harrison said.

Of the 91-page anthology celebrating the joys and challenges of being a mom, Harrison said, “The book is about motherhood, the mantle that has been passed down to us and our journey as mothers. Each author in the book has shared her journey in motherhood, writing about being a mother and as well as the wisdom passed down by their mothers.”

She said her contribution is featured in the chapter titled, “Mother to Mother: A Tapestry of Love,” which centers around the loss of a child years ago.

“I share my experience when in my third pregnancy I suffered through a miscarriage. I share the hope that I received and journey of healing I went through,” Harrison said. “My chapter also shines a light on the transformative power of hope and healing in the face of loss.”

According to Harrison, the book “honors the journey of motherhood and embraces the healing power of shared stories.”

She said she discovered a love of writing and the thrill of getting published after helping her second-grade class at Rocky Mount Preparatory School produce a book about extinct animals.

“Ever since that project, it left a desire in me for another book,” she said.

Harrison intents to keep on writing. Her immediate project is writing a companion journal for her contribution to the book.

“I will also be collaborating soon on another anthology,” she said. “My next solo literary project will be a devotional.”

In her author biography, Harrison notes that she has three adult children, two who have had long careers in the military and another who is a successful entrepreneur. Of the mindset that goes into raising children to become successful adults, Harrison said, “You have to set an example so your children will have a role model. They’ll see what you’ve done in your life, and they’ll want to imitate or model what you’ve done.”

The book is available at Amazon.com. The book and the decorative wreaths she creates are on sale at Sparkling Creations, which is located at 976 N. Winstead Ave. in Rocky Mount.
