    SPORTS ROUNDUP: SN softball blanks Bulldogs to stay unbeaten

    The Southern Nash softball team improved to 13-0 on the season and 8-0 in Big East Conference play by defeating Nash Central 12-0 on Wednesday night.

    The Ladybirds took a 1-0 lead on a RBI groundout by Addison Brumfield in the top of the second inning and stretched the lead to 4-0 by scoring three runs with two outs in the third.

    A fourth-inning, two-run homer by Anna Dickinson made the score 6-0 before the Ladybirds erupted for six runs in the fifth inning highlighted by Carlee Beckham’s grand slam, her second of the season and her fifth home run overall.

    Kaylie Love and Aliyah Croll led the Southern Nash offense with three hits each. Dickinson got the start on the mound and allowed one hit in five innings and struck out 10..

    Nash Central fell to 6-3 in conference and 9-4 overall. The Bulldogs were coming off a 16-1 win over Rocky Mount earlier that day as the Gryphons finished with four hits (two from Jada Bernard and one each from Emily Tinklepaugh and Reyann Hatu). Jocelyn Ramey drove in the team’s lone run.

    Roanoke Rapids 11, Northern Nash 1

    Northern Nash dropped to 1-7 in the Big East 2A/3A Conference and 3-9 overall after falling at Roanoke Rapids on Wednesday night.

    Emily Clay (double, RBI) and Chandlar Wood (double) led the Knights at the plate, with Kailey Burden and Emma Hunt added the other hits.

    Clay and Wood combined on the mound to allow 10 hits and 11 runs (nine earned) with 11 walks and four strikeouts.

    BASEBALL

    Roanoke Rapids 2, Southern Nash 1

    Southern Nash dropped to 8-9 overall and 4-4 in Big East 2A/3A Conference play with a loss at Roanoke Rapids on Wednesday.

    The Firebirds struck first in the third inning with a hit by Keegan Wallace to score Trey Ormond. Quickly after the Firebirds got on the board, Roanoke Rapids returned the favor with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

    Southern Nash got hits from Keegan Wallace, Luke Faulkner and Brayden Parker.

    Jeremiah Battle took the loss on the mound after going six innings and throwing 78 pitches. He gave up six hits, walked and allowed one earned run while striking out seven.

    Bunn 9, Northern Nash 3

    Bunn handled Northern Nash in a Big East 2A/3A Conference game on Wednesday as the Knights dropped to 5-3 in the league and 8-6 overall.

    The Wildcats improved to 5-3 in the conference and 9-6 overall after scoring eight straight runs to erase a 1-0 deficit.

    Nash Central 2 Franklinton 0

    The Bulldogs picked up an important Big East 2A/3A Conference victory at home against Franklinton on Wednesday to improve to 6-4 in the conference and 8-8 overall.

    Nash Central broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

    Colby Lewis, Braxton Sykes (RBI), Justin Langley and Landyn Holt had the hits for the Bulldogs. Camden Posey drove in the other run.

    Lewis was stellar on the mound for Nash Central. He allowed just two hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk over seven innings (86 pitches).

    RMA 5, Halifax 3

    Trailing 3-2 after four innings, Rocky Mount Academy was able to tie it in the fifth inning and score twice in the sixth to gain a Carolina Independent Conference victory over Halifax Academy Wednesday afternoon at North Carolina Wesleyan University.

    Parker Sherrod (two RBI), Gehrig Miller (RBI) and Dustin Proctor had the hits for the Eagles (3-0 CIC, 7-3 overall).

    Luke Holloman (three frames) and Wyatt Wells (four innings) combined to allow five hits and three runs (two earned) with three walks and seven strikeouts.

    Perquimans 14, Tarboro 4

    The Vikings fell to 2-4 in the Four Rivers 1A Conference and 6-9 overall after Perquimans enjoyed three big innings (five runs in the second and fifth frames and four in the fourth) on Wednesday at Municipal Stadium in Tarboro.

    Camden Matthews (two RBI) and Cole Craddock led Tarboro with two hits while Landon Browning (RBI), Gabe Kassnove and Stephen Ribustello (double, RBI) had then other hits for the Vikings.

    Matthews and Browning combined on the mound to surrender nine hits and 14 runs (one earned) with six walks and one strikeout. The Tarboro defense committed five errors as well.

    GOLF

    Firebirds fourth

    Southern Nash’s golf team finished fourth overall in a Big East 2A/3A Conference match on Wednesday afternoon at The River Golf Club at Lake Royale in Louisburg.

    The Firebirds were led by Ashten Batten (89), Gavin Craft (92) and Ross Hinnant (93).

    TENNIS

    Southern Nash 9 Rocky Mount 0

    After not playing for more than two weeks, the Southern Nash boys tennis team defeated Rocky Mount (1-8, 1-8) in a Big East 2A/3A Conference match on the road Wednesday to stay perfect in the league (9-0) while improving to 9-0 overall.

    Singles winners for the Firebirds were No. 1 Frank Gonzalez (6-1, 6-4), No. 2 Alex Underwood (6-2, 6-3), No. 3 Luis Robles (6-0, 6-4), Gilberto Nunez (6-0, 6-0), No. 5 Julian Gonzalez (6-0, 6-0) and No. 6 Matthew Coble (6-0, 6-0).

    Frank Gonzalez teamed with Underood for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 2 team of Nunez and Julian Gonzalez won 8-0 and the No. 3 duo of Robles and Coble took an 8-2 victory.
