RED OAK — One team is still unbeaten, while the other continues to struggle in the early going of the 2024 high school volleyball season.

Northern Nash remained perfect (4-0 overall) with a 25-18, 25-12, 25-17 triumph over Wilson Hunt (1-5 overall) in a nonconference match at home on Monday afternoon.

Hunt dropped its fourth match in a row.

The ability to maintain some service runs and complete assists proved to be the difference for the Knights.

The opening set had two lead changes and one tie before Maylee Garner served three points (one an ace, another on her assist/smash from Nevaeh Ingram to put the home team up 4-2.

The Warriors hung around behind kills from Presley Frazier and Makenzie Collins and were able to get within a point on several occasions, and they tied it at 12 on a missed NN kill and took a 13-12 advantage on a point from Greta Speight before a sideout deadlocked the score at 13-all.

Northern’s Emily Clay then decided to change her team’s fortunes for the better.

Clay served two points to give the Knights the lead, prompting a Hunt timeout. Undeterred, Clay responded with seven in a row (one on a kill by Ingram on a free ball) to put NN ahead 22-13.

Hunt made a brief comeback with three points from 19 (one on a kill by Frazier and one on a Kayla Battle tap at the net) to get within five (22-17), but the Knights closed out the set on a point from Lilly Teets.

The teams battled through three ties and four lead changes early in the second set when Ingram, a St. Francis (Pennsylvania) commit, smashed a kill to give Northern Nash the lead for good, 5-4.

The Warriors pulled within four but Clay provided a well-timed block on a short return to give the Knights a 14-8 edge.

Libero Piper Jones then stepped to the service line and reeled off four in a row (two were aces) to make it 18-9. Ingram finished off a long point with another putaway and Ava Lloyd served three straight to put her team two points from the set. Ingram added a return and Garner served the final two points to give NN a two sets to none lead.

The third set featured four ties and four lead changes through the first five servers as neither team could gain a discernable advantage.

Hunt was able to take a 7-5 lead but Northern rallied to tie it at 8-all on an Ingram kill. Jones’s two points (sparked by another Clay block) made it 10-9 Knights.

A rare sideout by the home team enabled the Warriors to trim the margin to one (11-10), but a kill from Clay and two points by Garner gave NN a 15-10 advantage.

Frazier had a couple of kills for Hunt to keep the Warriors within striking distance, but a kill from Harper Wilson, three straight points from Jones and a serving violation on Hunt ended the match.
