The way Rocky Mount Academy’s volleyball team came out against Harrells Christian Academy on Tuesday, it appeared the Eagles were still adversely affected by a straight-sets loss to Parrott Academy the day before.

But five service rotations into the first set and trailing 8-3, the home team flipped the switch.

McKenna Rogers used a Landry Miller assist to put away a kill, then served eight points in a row to put the Eagles in control. They went on to win that first set 25-22 and take the next two sets 25-13, 25-13 to complete the Carolina Independent Conference sweep over the Crusaders at home.

RMA improved to 2-0 in the league and 5-1 overall, while Harrells emerged 1-2 in conference play and 3-4 overall.

After a tough loss at Parrott on Monday, it took a few points for the Eagles to shake off the effects as the Crusaders built an early advantage.

But the Miller assist/Rogers smash seemed to get RMA going.

Rogers served the first five of her eight straight before Harrells called timeout. An ace followed by a kills from Kaylee Wright off a Miller assist made it 12-8 Eagles.

While the Crusaders battled to keep it close, they never could get any closer than a point the remainder of the first set.

Wright had a kill and a tap at the net to make it 17-13, but Lexi Bass served four in a row to get the visitors within one before a return error pushed the Eagles lead to 18-16.

A Rogers return off a free ball made it 20-17, and Miller’s deep serve extended the RMA lead to 21-17 before a Harrells putaway trimmed the margin to three. Rogers served the final three points to put the Eagles up a set.

Miller reeled off six straight to open the second set and got help form a nice return from Katie Bulluck and her assist/Rogers kill.

The home team’s advantage grew to 11-4 before Bass served three points (Mary Willow Rumbold had a block) to get the Crusaders within 11-7.

RMA libero Hannah Garris had a return and Wright followed with four straight points from the service line to make it 16-8. Later in the set, a Rogers kill led to three straight points from Ava Blevins (Miller set up her sister, Berkeley, for a kill) to increase the home team’s lead to 23-12. A three-hit call on a return led to Berkeley Miller serving the final point when Ellen Feagans converted a free ball to win the set.

The Eagles trailed briefly in the final set before a Landy Miller assist/Feagans smash tied it.

From there, RMA took control as Garris recorded five straight points to give the home team the lead.

Berkeley Miller added six straight points to make it 19-8, and a point from Feagans’ serve put RMA two points from the match. A Harrells timeout only postponed the inevitable as Feagan added a point and the final point came when an attempted Harrells kill went off a hustling Garris’s foot right to Landry Miller, who set up her sister for the final kill of the match.

Rogers finished with 14 digs, four service aces and nine kills for the Eagles, while Landry Miller dished out 20 assists and Wright chipped in with seven kills and nine digs.
