    Bishop soccer teams earn wins; volleyball falls to Greensboro

    The men’s and women’s soccer teams from North Carolina Wesleyan University earned USA South Conference wins on Saturday (Oct. 5) while the Bishops’ volleyball squad fell to Greensboro.

    MEN’S SOCCER Wesleyan 2, SoVa 1A Tiago Feler goal at 66:32 of the second half was the difference as the North Carolina Wesleyan University men’s soccer team slipped past Southern Virginia 2-1 in a USA South Conference match on Saturday (Oct. 5) at Scalf Field.

    The Bishops, winners of four in a row, improved to 3-0 in the conference and 5-2-4 overall, while the Knights fell to 0-1 in league play and 5-2-2 overall.

    Southern Virginia took a 1-0 lead at 20:58 in the first half on an unassisted goal by Benjamin Simister.

    Wesleyan’s team tally at 43:47 deadlocked the match at 1-all, where it remained until halftime.

    Feler then recorded what turned out to be the game-winner off an assist from Bastien Dechamps with 23:38 left in the match to give the Wesleyan team the lead for good.

    Wesleyan outshot Southern Virginia 7-3 in the second half and finished with a 10-6 edge in total shots (4-3 in shots on goal).

    The Knights had more corner kicks (9-4) and more fouls (9-4).

    Feler finished with half of the shots on goal for the Bishops and collected three shots overall. Julian Gamboa also had three shots (one on goal) while Nicolas Sautua added the final shotb on goal.

    Rafael Farina picked up the win in goal for Wesleyan as he made two saves and allowed one goal in 90 minutes.

    Simnister (two shots on goal) and Ammon Lewis (two shots, none on goal) as well as Zach Bartholomew (shot on goal) led Southern Virginia. Dallin Chappell made three saves and gave up two goals in absorbing the loss.

    Up Next: Wesleyan travels to Staunton, Virginia on Saturday (Oct. 12) for a 2 p.m. USA South Conference match against Mary Baldwin.

    WOMEN’S SOCCER Wesleyan 3, Pfeiffer 1The Bishops improved to 2-1-1 in the USA South and 4-7-1 overall by handing Pfeiffer a league defeat on Saturday at Lefko-Mills Field in Misenheimer.

    Pfeiffer dropped to 0-2 in conference and 2-6 overall.

    Wesleyan never trailed in the contest as it took a 2-0 lead at halftime and matched the Falcons with a goal in the second half.

    Peyton Staub gave the Bishops a 1-0 lead at 21:07 of the first half on an assist from Makena Meyer.

    Samantha Dell made it 2-0 with her goal off a Staub assist at 22:55.

    Pfeiffer cut the margin in half when Khamani Spencer collected a goal at 76:57 off an assist from Maria Altamirano.

    Meyer recorded an unassisted goal at 86:18 to seal the victory for Wesleyan.

    Pfeiffer held the edge in shots (10-7) but Wesleyan led 6-5 in shots on goal. The Bishops also held advantages in saves (4-3) and corner kicks (5-4).

    Dell had four shots (all on goal) for Wesleyan, while Meyer added a shot on goal as did Staub and Eden Whiteside managed the other shot.

    Grace Walls made four saves and gave up just one goal in her 90-minute goalkeeping stint for the Bishops.

    Spencer collected five shots (three on goal) for Pfeiffer while Emma LaFave added two shots (both on goal).

    Olivia Garver suffered the loss after allowing three goals and making three saves in 90 minutes.

    Up Next: Wesleyan played host to William Peace University at 2 p.m. on Tuesday. The Bishops travel to Winston-Salem on Saturday (Oct. 12) for a 2 p.m. USA South Conferencve match against Salem.

    VOLLEYBALL

    Greensboro 3, Wesleyan 0

    The Bishops suffered their third straight loss as Greensboro swept them 25-12, 25-20, 25-19 in a USA South Conference match on Saturday at Everett Gymnasium.

    Wesleyan fell to 1-6 in the conference and 2-12 overall, while Greensboro improved to 5-2 in the league and 12-5 overall.

    Kayla Simmons led the Bishops in kills (six) while Sloan Martin added four kills, two service aces, 18 assists and seven digs.

    Emily Foraker and Aajah Vazquez each provided two blocks and Jadyn Smith led the defense with 15 digs while Chloe Baggett added six.

    Kelci Brooks (14 kills and 11 digs), Jaylyn Templeton (22 assists) and Morgan Mayfield/Grace Young (16 and 14 assists, respectively) were the statistical leaders for Greensboro.

    Up Next: Wesleyan entertains USA South Conference foe Methodist (6-1, 15-2) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday (Oct. 9) in Everett Gymnasium.
