    Martinez, Knights soccer defeat Roanoke Rapids

    Northern Nash eclipsed the .500 mark in Big East 2A/3A Conference play (3-2-1) and improved to 4-5-2 overall with a 4-1 triumph over Roanoke Rapids on Wednesday in Red Oak.

    Gotti Martinez led the Knights with two goals and an assist, while Jayden Roberson added a goal and an assist and Roland Mboumien collected a goal for the winners.

    Martinez finished with four shots on goal, while Corey Odom, Mboumien and Christian Lee each added a pair of shots on goal for Northern.

    Brady Jenkins was solid in goal for Northern Nash as he made five saves and allowed just one goal in 80 minutes.

    The Yellow Jackets dropped to 3-4 in the conference and 6-8 overall.

    Nash Central 4, Rocky Mount 0Nash Central earned a shutout over Rocky Mount in a Big East 2A/3A Conference boys’ soccer match on Wednesday.

    The Gryphons fell to 0-6 in conference play and 0-13-2 overall, while the Bulldogs improved to 2-7 in the league and 6-11-1 overall.

    NECP 3, Gates 3

    North East Carolina Prep battled Gates County to a 3-3 tie in a Four Rivers 1A Conference match on Wednesday in Tarboro.

    The Huskies emerged 1-1-1 in the conference and 2-2-1 overall, while the Red Barons fell to 1-0-1 in league play and 3-8-3 overall.

    (COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL) Methodist 3, Wesleyan 1North Carolina Wesleyan’s volleyball team stunned Methodist with a first-set triumph, but the Monarchs stormed back to take a 23-25, 25-13, 25-14, 25-14 victory over the Bishops in a USA South Conference match at Everett Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

    Wesleyan dropped to 1-7 in the conference and 2-13 overall with its fourth straight defeat. Methodist improved to 7-1 in league play and 16-2 overall.

    Brooklynn Covic led Wesleyan with 10 kills and 13 digs, while Sloan Martin added 26 assists and 10 digs for the Bishops.

    Fiona Egan recorded seven kills.

    Aajah Vazquez added six kills and eight blocks, and Jadyn Smith provided 18 digs while Martin contributed 10.

    Wesleyan held a 16-13 edge in kills in the first set and made just three attack errors to 13 kills and five errors from Methodist. After the first set, however, the Bishops had 17 kills combined over the next three sets with 18 attack errors; the Monarchs collected 44 kills against 19 attack errors.

    Up Next: Wesleyan continues USA South Conference play on Saturday (Oct. 12) with a noon contest against Salem in Winston-Salem followed by a 2 p.m. match against Carolina University.
