A celebration of dance: 'Footloose' took the stage at the Imperial Centre
“Bomont? Where the hell is Bomont?” Over the weekend, the celebrated teen-centric musical “Footloose” took to the stage for its one-weekend run at the Imperial Centre for the Arts and Sciences in Rocky Mount to answer that question. “Footloose” came to prominence as a 1984 movie musical starring Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer, John Lithgow and Sarah Jessica Parker. It’s about a Chicago teen forced to relocate to the fictional rural...
Anthony G. Engrassia: Pickleball in retirement is about staying active and having fun
Staying active in retirement can be a chore, but it doesn’t have to be! In recent years, doctors have emphasized the importance of regular physical activity, especially for older adults. Those aged 65 and older benefit significantly from staying active, enjoying increased mobility, reduced injury risks and an overall improved quality of life. Physical exercise also plays a vital role in reducing dementia risk and alleviating symptoms of anxiety and depression. ...
Rocky Speight: Retirees must identify, manage income sources
During your working years, you know where your income is coming from because you’re working. But once you retire, you’ll have to identify your income sources, know how much you can expect from them and know how to manage them to help support a retirement that could last two or three decades. So, where will your retirement income come from? And what decisions will you need to make about these income sources? ...

New students gearing up for the fall semester at Edgecombe Community College are invited to join college officials for a new student orientation event. The event will be held from 5-6 p.m. Wednesday on the community college’s Tarboro campus in the multipurpose room of the Barnhill-Jenkins Center for Innovation and is aptly named the Student Transition, Advising, and Registration Time @ ECC (or START@ECC), to help new students start off on the right track prior to the fall semester. ...
Free adoptions offered at Rocky Mount Animal Services
Monday is the last day the Rocky Mount Animal Services will be offering free pet adoptions at its animal shelter on Church Street. Although there are other expenses that go along with adopting a dog or a cat, at least the initial $45 adoption fee won’t be one of them. A spokesperson for the city of Rocky Mount said the Rocky Mount Animal Services Unit is currently waiving adoption fees through Monday to encourage anyone looking for a pet companion to come by the animal...
Davis rallies support at political gathering downtown
U.S. Rep. Don Davis, D-1st District, on Thursday night cited what he sees as the need to protect the nation’s democracy at a turn out the vote gathering at one of downtown’s signature businesses. “The stakes are high like they’ve never been before,” Davis, a first-term congressman, said near the end of a speech at Moe & D’s restaurant, grill and bar after other local and regional Democratic candidates spoke. ...
Anyone shocked by Truex's decision?
Was anyone shocked when Martin Truex Jr. recently said he would quit full-time racing after this season? You shouldn’t have been. After all, the New Jersey native had hinted for several years he was growing weary of NASCAR’s relentless grind. And, really, who could blame him? “MTJ” turned 44 last month and has raced for more than half his life. He was in Modified and Busch North before becoming a...

Review: Smooth operator offers sporty EV option
Nissan debuted the fully electric Ariya plug-in for 2023, and this year’s 2024 model continues mostly unchanged — except for Nissan lowering the price for the entry point Ariya by about $3,500. With the Nissan Leaf set to be retired, the Ariya is well-positioned to take the lead compact vehicle spot in Nissan’s EV lineup offering buyers better room inside, style, power and range. There are two Ariya motor choices: a single-motor FWD and dual-motor “e-4orce” AWD configuration. The basic Engage trim comes standard with...
Matthew Stevens: Great-tasting peaches can be tough to grow but worth a try
Peaches are one of my favorite fruits to eat during the summer. It’s really hard to beat the flavor of a fresh peach picked just that day, but growing peaches is unfortunately not as easy as one would hope, due to a variety of disease and insect problems, as well as a danger of ill-timed frosts reducing yield. Peaches are native to China but have been grown in the Southeastern United States since the early 1900s. Like most fruit trees, they are normally grafted to...
Letter: Expanding voucher program will hurt rural counties most
I am writing on behalf of The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan group. In our state, 78 percent of students are educated in public schools. North Carolina taxpayers' money is spread out over the state for school funding according to population. Now, 800 million dollars of taxpayer money has been allocated for vouchers. Some vouchers would go to the wealthiest students. This takes funding away from counties that have...

Forty-three Edgecombe County high school seniors recently declared their intention to attend Edgecombe Community College in the fall. The community college honored the students at ECC Signing Day held at high schools in May. Signing Day is a national initiative to celebrate students for making a commitment to higher education. Students, community college leaders and high school officials attended Signing Day events at North East Carolina Preparatory School west of...
Narcotics trafficker sentenced to 50 years
A high-volume cocaine supplier to lower-level drug dealers in the Rocky Mount area who had once fired shots at a person has been ordered to serve 50 years in federal prison for conspiracy to distribute cocaine and possession of a firearm by a felon, authorities said. Andre Downey, 37, was sentenced July 8 by U.S. District Court Judge James C. Dever III in a federal court in Raleigh, according to online court records. ...

Local high school grad headed to Utah for two-year mission trip
High school graduate Wade Coffield of Rocky Mount is going to spend the first two years of life post high school as a missionary for the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Coffield will be headed to Ogden, Utah, in September. In addition to saving up money from afterschool jobs to fund his mission trip, Coffield’s commitment has already included attendance at a five-day-a-week seminary program held before school. ...
Post demerger, school systems see shift in hiring needs
In about a month, staff and faculty of Edgecombe County Public Schools will be returning to the classroom to welcome students for the start of the 2024-25 school year. The district will look quite different in the upcoming school year — a result of the demerger that is bringing students who live on the Edgecombe County side of Rocky Mount into the school system. Prior to the demerger, all Rocky Mount public school students were served by the Nash County Public Schools system. Along with...
'Relationships are everything': Speaker and educator Michael Bonner surprised by former students
Educator and author Michael Bonner, who gained national attention when he and his students were featured on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” has become a popular public speaker over the last several years. But the former Pitt County Schools teacher of the year was at a loss for words Wednesday when he stood to address the audience at East Carolina University’s Rural Education Summer Learning Exchange. What left the eastern North...
Tom Campbell: Lawmakers continue to fail public schools
Tears are being shed over the legislature’s failure to appropriate additional funding for private school vouchers. One Charlotte mom complained, “We voted them in with the promise they’d give a free education to all, and it hasn’t happened.” Dear Charlotte mom: You are wrong. Every child in North Carolina has the opportunity of a free education in traditional public schools. Your child is not being punished. In fact, those who are being punished are the children in traditional schools — punished because our General Assembly...
