Political leaders of both parties in North Carolina denounce violence
Violence doesn’t have a place in politics, said North Carolina’s leaders of both major parties in Raleigh and Washington, D.C., in the aftermath of an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Democrats and Republicans posting messages to social media, through words or video, were in agreement against violence. Most encouraged prayers and offered gratitude that Trump survived the attempt on his life. Trump was at a rally in western...
Sidney fire chief learned from great examples
As volunteers for so many community services across the country have significantly decreased, in particular those volunteers dependent on rural fire departments, the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department in Beaufort County has seen an increase in their volunteer firefighters. That has come in large part due to the leadership of Chief Stephen Leighty. Leighty credited both his grandfather and father, not for just his love of firefighting, but for the importance...

D.G. Martin: Book explains where the Revolutionary War was won
Last week we celebrated the anniversary of the July 4, 1776, Declaration of Independence. This declaration, important as it was and is, did not deliver the independence it declared. It took eight years of fighting for the American former colonists to gain that recognition. A new book by Alan Pell Crawford, “This Fierce People: The Untold Story of America’s Revolutionary War,”relates the story of the final three years of that...
D.G. Martin: Good leaders need to know when to step down
My father had been president of Davidson College for almost 10 years when at age 58 he learned that he was afflicted with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. He was popular with students, who often tossed frisbees with him as he walked across campus from his office to the president’s home. He was friendly, likable, and beloved by staff and townspeople. Davidson’s campus escaped most of the turmoil that disrupted some other...
Phoebe Jollay-Castelblanco: Narcan a simple investment to save lives
Imagine you could spend $45 to save someone’s life. On a good market day, that’s the same you would pay to fill up your sedan’s gas tank. It’s less than a quarter of what a family of four spends on groceries per week. The average American spends about 22 times that much on the Christmas holiday every year. So, would you sacrifice the $45 for a stranger’s life? I believe...

Martin County hiker climbs Mt. Everest
When one hears a friend of a friend climbed to Mt. Everest’s Base Camp, one assumes an experienced hiker, rock-climber-type decided to step up his or her game. Not so for Martin County resident Brian Leggett, who is now the area’s resident Everest climber. Leggett recently returned from nearly the highest point on earth after a mentally and physically challenging 20-day trek that began as a thought while running one...
Froma Harrop: Women face nightmare reality thanks to Trump
Try as he might, Donald Trump can’t blur the hard reality he forced upon American women. He vowed in 2016 to get rid of Roe v. Wade and succeeded. As a result, American women lost a half-century right to end an unwanted or dangerous pregnancy. Some of the harsh truths turn into nightmares. When Nicole Miller, mother of two and 20 weeks pregnant, started to bleed heavily, her husband rushed her to an emergency room in Boise, Idaho. She needed a life-saving abortion, but the...
Steven Roberts: Democrats frustrated, party unity fractured
“I’m getting frustrated by the elites in the party,” President Joe Biden vented on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “’Oh, they know so much more.’ Any of these guys that don’t think I should run, run against me.” When host Joe Scarborough mentioned that some donors want him to withdraw, the president snarled, “I don’t care what the millionaires think. ... I am running.” But many party loyalists are also frustrated — with the president. “Among Democrats,” reports Punchbowl News, “there’s an overwhelming sense of dread about...
Byron York: Democrats enabled Biden in cognitive deception
On June 4, the Wall Street Journal published a story headlined, “Behind Closed Doors, Biden Shows Signs of Slipping.” Based on interviews with 45 people, the article reported that associates described President Joe Biden as showing signs of age, “a president who appears slower now, someone who has both good moments and bad ones.” The Journal described a January White House meeting with congressional leaders on Ukraine policy in which Biden “spoke so softly at times that some participants struggled to hear him, according to...
Sylvia Hughes: Daniel was an example of standing tall
So the governors and satraps sought to find some charge against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find no charge or fault, because he was faithful; nor was there any error or fault found in him. — Daniel 6:4 Daniel’s life simply amazes me. He was taken from his home, his family and his country, when he was somewhere between 14 and 17 years old. Nebuchadnezzar ordered his chief...
Yancey County is worth the trek
For your next roadtrip, check out Burnsville, located in Yancey County. My partner, David, and I thoroughly enjoyed our experience and have not stopped raving about this quaint mountain town, located right near the Tennessee border. Burnsville is named after Otway Burns, a naval hero in the War of 1812 and an Onslow County native. Burnsville is in the shadow of Mount Mitchell, the highest mountain peak east of the...
