Editorial: Vouchers must not be blank checks
It is not an unrealistic expectation that North Carolinians hold elected officials accountable for how tax dollars are spent. When legislators dole out more than half a billion dollars to private schools, it should go without mention there would be clear provisions for taxpayers to know how much money goes where, whether the money is being spent for the purpose intended and whether that purpose is being achieved. When it...
Tom Campbell: Supreme Court ruling gave us a king
How would this nation’s founders react to the Supreme Court’s decision on presidential immunity? Students of history would likely say those patriots would be appalled and frightened. The 13 colonies rebelled under the monarchy in Great Britain. They were willing to fight to the death to rid themselves of a ruler with absolute power to tax and govern them. After the long and sacrificial war, the new states were resolute to never again subject themselves to so much authority by one person. ...
Pam Strickland: New law attacks demand for sex trafficking
North Carolina recently became the third state in the country to make the purchase of sex a felony. Anti-human trafficking advocates across the state have been actively educating legislators since January 2023 about the need to change solicitation of prostitution from a misdemeanor to a felony. Signed by Gov. Roy Cooper on June 28, H971 is a valuable tool in the demand reduction arsenal. Demand reduction is a strategy to prevent sex trafficking by reducing the number of potential sex buyers. ...
A few thoughts from the WNBA to fencing
I have a few thoughts this week so buckle up, we are going to move quickly. How many players selected in the first round of the NBA draft did you recognize? For the record, you should know that Bronny James was picked in the second round. Keep that in mind before you answer. How about the WNBA? How many players selected in the first round of that draft did you...
Cheryl Orr: Bonnie’s Refrigerator Pickles perfect for cucumber season
One of the things I love about eastern North Carolina is the friendliness and hospitality of life in a small Southern town. We may not all be locals, or even originally from the South, but the kindness of friends and neighbors is a common thread in our region. Recently, my friend and neighbor — Bonnie Pierce — brought us a jar of her wonderful pickles. In Edenton, Bonnie is known for her many volunteer endeavors in town, including leading the Trolley Tours with lively banter...
In 33rd year of Gatekeepers program, youth spend a week fixing up homes of neighbors
In its 33 years of service in Nash and Edgecombe counties, the Gatekeepers Workcamp program has been deputizing volunteers and local youth to help repair homes owned by elderly and disabled homeowners unable to make the repairs themselves. Over the past week, 45 youth volunteers from eight area churches and 20 adult supervisors formed into work crews to assist four homeowners. Another 40 volunteers helped with logistics, food service and other essential duties. This year’s effort concluded Friday afternoon with painting projects, home repairs and...

City gets go-ahead for financing replacement Fire Station No. 2
The Local Government Commission, in a 5-3 vote on Tuesday, approved the city of Rocky Mount’s request to finance construction of a replacement Fire Station No. 2 at the site of the present facility just southwest of downtown. McKinley Wooten, an assistant N.C. Revenue secretary who Tuesday served on the commission’s board in place of N.C. Revenue Secretary Ronald Penny, made the motion, with a second from N.C. Auditor Jessica Holmes. The vote came after a failed motion by N.C. Treasurer Dale Folwell, with a...
Southpaws hand River Bandits second straight loss
A solo home run by Ryan Ulisse in the bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the difference as the New Bern Southpaws upended the Tarboro River Bandits 5-4 in an Old North State League Northeastern Division game on Tuesday night in New Bern. The River Bandits, who were scheduled to play a non-divisional game at home against the Fuquay-Varina Twins on Wednesday followed by a divisional contest at home against the Southpaws on Thursday, dropped their second straight game and fell to 9-6...

Letter: Handicapping debate performances
I don’t know about you, but I felt all warm and fuzzy hearing the two presumptive nominees for the most important job in our country, maybe the world, debating the topic that keeps all of us awake at night, that makes us old folks worry about the world our children and grandchildren will be facing when we’re long gone. Yep. Who has the lowest golf handicap! That’s the reason I...

Ask the Doctors: More drownings highlight need for water safety
Q Our 3-year-old daughter almost drowned when she fell into a neighbor’s pool last summer. She’s going to be OK, but she is still facing some medical problems. This has made us aware that water safety is actually a health issue. We hope you might address this in an upcoming column. A As parents ourselves, we appreciate your bringing up an important topic. Unfortunately, accidental drownings are a grim fact of summer life. Data reported to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show...
Alexander Jones: N.C. must reframe its economic debate
At the beginning of the 20th century, North Carolina’s backwardness inspired leaders desperate for progress to initiate a strong drive for industrialization that made the state inherently conservative. And while this focus on development imbued the state’s politics with a salutary far-sightedness, the capitalist imperative endowed business lobbyists with a final veto on any policy that seemed to derail the thrust toward industrial modernity. As a result, plutocracy has reigned in Raleigh for a century. ...
Joy Franklin: Media grilled Biden, gave Trump a bye
In the days following the June 27 CNN-produced presidential debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, national news outlets have been dominated by stories of Biden’s poor performance and calls from various pundits, and even the New York Times Editorial Board, for him to step aside. Yet, there have been no calls for Trump to step aside as the Republican nominee, even though his debate performance, while more robust than Biden’s, was almost wholly untethered from fact or truth. Why have lead...

City's community gardens provide healthy lifestyle, sense of purpose
Two community gardens are flourishing in the city of Rocky Mount — thanks to a team of volunteers and gardeners who tend to the bounty for the benefit of their neighbors. Janeen Noetling, a 71-year-old local resident, said the work in the garden works every muscle, but she feels good and sleeps well, too. “I’m still able to do a whole lot of stuff, and I love it,” Noetling said. ...
