PHOTO GALLERY: Stingrays outgun Flying Fish

ROGERSVILLE — The Church Hill Stingrays strolled into Rogersville on Thursday, July 18, and swam away with a clean sweep of the Rogersville Flying Fish in the second Hawkins County battle of the summer.

The Stingrays picked up wins in both the girls (311-216) and boys (263-257) competition to take a 574-473 victory over the Flying Fish in the combined team scores.

“I don’t always keep score during these meets, but I do for this one,” said Church Hill coach Jim Whalen, who admits he can’ t really lose no matter who wins.

Jim and wife Robin Whalen serve as the head coaches for both the Cherokee and Volunteer High School swim teams and the combined Hawkins County Swim middle school squad. During the summer months, Jim and Robin coach the Stingrays and their daughter Tieran Whalen, along with Landry Russell, coaches the Rogersville Flying Fish. So, while it might be a matter of Whalen family pride, all of the swimmers are basically family and train together during the school year.

The two teams will wrap up the summer season at the league swim championships on Saturday, July 27, starting at 9 a.m. at the Kingsport Aquatic Center.
