Remi Wolf Wrote Her Zedd Collab ‘Lucky’ When She Thought She’d Only Be a Songwriter

Sometimes, it takes five years for a song to see the light of day. Zedd and Remi Wolf caught up with Rolling Stone backstage at Lollapalooza earlier this month and revealed that their collaboration “ Lucky ” was written when Wolf considered pursuing pure songwriting — five years ago.

“‘Lucky,’ the song, I wrote in 2019 during my career as a strict songwriter, which was two months long,” Wolf told Rolling Stone ‘s Delisa Shannon with a laugh. “And during those two months, I wrote ‘Lucky.’ And very quickly, it went to you, [Zedd].”

“And it was a song that I loved and wanted to produce, but I hadn’t gotten too deep on my album yet… at that time, you didn’t want to be on it,” Zedd replied.

“I had like four songs out the time, and I didn’t think I could do it yet,” Wolf explained. “I loved the song always. I was always like, ‘It’s a banger.’ And now we’re in 2024. Sometimes shit takes a long time.”

Wolf and Zedd met at the start of 2024 to write a second verse for the track after Wolf was convinced to join the DJ/producer on it. Zedd even had other people sing the track Wolf wrote, but it simply didn’t feel the same without her.

“Sometimes you meet somebody, and you either connect or you get a feeling you won’t connect. I didn’t know where our session was going to go,” Zedd said. “I had no clue or expectations. We just made music and chatted for a long time.”

During the interview, the pair of musicians also talked about how different their work styles can be when making music on their own, and how they made the new song work.

“You’re incredibly meticulous, and I’m not,” Wolf said. “We have very different workflows. Almost opposite, which I think is complementary. I’m a speed-demon girlie. I’m an explosion of energy, and whatever happens within the first two or three hours is the song.”

“I wrote the first song on my album nine and a half years ago,” Zedd responded. “Sometimes I marinate in a song for years before I know what to do. Sometimes music has to be in the right context… If you make music that comes from the heart, it’s timeless and with no expiration date.”
