Sometimes, there’s nothing more powerful than a haircut — and that’s exactly what Lola Young needed when she went about making her latest album, This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyway .

Speaking with Rolling Stone ‘s Delisa Shannon backstage at Lollapalooza , the rising English singer-songwriter said making her new album was “the most me” she’s ever felt. That’s because she went into the creative process feeling totally unburdened by self-consciousness or outside perceptions. When asked what inspired this, Young quipped, “I basically cut my hair.”

She continued: “I used to be that bitch that was like, ‘I’m not cutting my hair,’ and I had some awful bob with little straggly bits — I’m exaggerating. But you know when people say, when you cut your hair and it changes things, especially for a woman, I think that can be really important to create a transitional stage. It’s a turning point. You go, ‘Actually, hang on, I can be who I want to be.’”

Elsewhere in the interview, Young spoke about what makes recording in Los Angeles so special, but also the deep love she has for her life-long home base of South London. And while Young only released This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyway a few months ago, she’s already starting to think about the next music she’ll be making.

Describing her creative process as a “running diary,” Young said, “I always believe that music is cathartic. It’s an open book, so I’m able to take bits and leave bits, and then I want to say everything, and then I want to say nothing — it’s just great to have that always in my life. It’s my only true love.”

Young has a bunch of North American tour dates lined up this fall, with her trek kicking off Sept. 25 in Toronto and wraps Oct. 25 in Vancouver. She’ll then return to the U.K. and Europe for a handful of shows in December and early 2025.
