New York City is a magnet for young hopefuls in entertainment, especially the ones willing to do whatever it takes to make it. Terry Gionoffrio, the ambitious young dancer portrayed by Julia Garner in the forthcoming film Apartment 7A, is a member of this cohort. But in the first trailer for the movie, which serves as a prequel to the 1968 psychological horror film Rosemary’s Baby , she learns the hard way that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

In A partment 7A , Gionoffrio suffers a career-altering injury that, in any other circumstance, should have sent her packing. But when an elderly couple with an overflow of money puts her up in a luxury apartment, she starts to believe the universe has sent her a lifeboat. The couple, played by Dianne Wiest and Kevin McNally, extend their apparent kindness, which leads Gionoffrio to meet a Broadway producer (Jim Sturgess) who could change her life forever.

And her life does change — just not how she hoped. Gionoffrio has the unfortunate opportunity of experiencing the horrors of Rosemary’s Baby long before Rosemary ever stepped foot in the Bramford apartment building. The film is set in 1965, but there were others before her, too. “I think something happened to the girl who lived here before me,” she says in the trailer. A nun she speaks to adds: “They did ungodly things to her, and now they’ve chosen you.”

Apartment 7A will begin streaming on Paramount+ on Friday, Sept. 27. The film was directed by Natalie Erika James, who worked on the screenplay alongside Skylar James and Christian White. It also features appearances from Marli Siu, Andrew Buchan, Rosy McEwen, and Kobna Holdbook-Smith.
