Demi Lovato Reassures Her Past Self on Single ‘You’ll Be OK, Kid’

Demi Lovato has released a reflective new single, “You’ll Be OK, Kid.” The song, produced by Warren “Oak” Felder, was written for the singer’s forthcoming documentary, Child Star , out Sept. 17 on Hulu.

“Working on Child Star was a deeply reflective experience for me,” Lovato explained in a statement. “It allowed me to deep dive into emotions from my childhood, while also connecting with others who had so many shared experiences. As we were editing the film, I became very inspired to write a song. The idea of connecting with my younger self through the pain and hardships that came along with child stardom was so important to me. I wrote the song as a letter to my inner child, and I hope that it can give others an opportunity to connect with their inner child as well.”

Child Star explores the highs and lows of growing up in the spotlight through the lens of some of the world’s most well-known former child stars. It features Lovato sitting down with celebrities like Drew Barrymore, Kenan Thompson, Christina Ricci, Raven-Symoné, JoJo Siwa, and Alyson Stoner. Lovato co-directed the film alongside Nicola Marsh, and it marks the singer’s directorial debut.

Lovato spoke about the documentary in a cover story with Teen Vogue earlier this, describing how it explores her early years working as a performer. “I don’t want to place the blame on anyone,” she said of her experiences. “But at the same time, there was a responsibility to protect us. And the problem is, once you get into the industry, the train doesn’t stop going unless you slam on the brakes.”

The singer’s last album, Holy Fvck , arrived in 2022. Last year she unveiled remix album, Revamped , which featured 10 re-recorded rock versions of songs from previous albums. Earlier this year, Lovato teamed up with Slash on a cover of the Temptations’ “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.”
