For the second year in a row, the Wings Over North Georgia air show will not take place due to construction on the main runway at the Richard B. Russell Regional Airport, however, the air show organizers recently announced that the Blue Angels will headline the show in 2025.
The Blue Angels have not been at the airshow since 2021, but have headlined the event several times in the past.
“We’re very excited to have the Blue Angels return,” Airport Manager John Carroll said. “The air show is such a great family event for Floyd County.”
The Floyd County Airport Commission, which meets Thursday, is also expected to receive an update on the extension of runway 1/19 which is currently being extended by 1,000 feet to make room for larger and heavier aircraft.
The Floyd County Commission approved a runway and parallel taxiway extension paving, lighting, and marking package to Bartow Paving Company for $6.9 million in February, and is scheduled to be completed in December.
Carroll also said a larger aircraft hangar, approved in the 2017 special purpose, local option sales tax referendum, will be going out to bid as soon as next week.
In addition, the 2023 SPLOST contains funding for more T-hangars, which are typically designed to fit a single aircraft.
There are more than 20 requests for T-hangars, Carroll said, which are currently in the design process. A major question is utilities. All of the hangars will have electrical, but there is also demand for hangars with water and possibly sewer connections.
The Richard B. Russell Regional Airport and Towers Field in Armuchee is owned by Floyd County, and is the largest airport in Georgia north of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
It was started in 1942 when Floyd County purchased 670 acres and immediately turned it over to the Department of the U.S. Navy to be used as a naval auxiliary base.
The navy originally built three asphalt runways, although only two are currently used.
The regular Floyd County Airport Commission meeting will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the airport’s community room at 304 Russell Field Road.
