A local apothecary, the Hive Botanical Experience, set down roots in a quaint stone cottage on Fifth Avenue across from The Foundry.

The move brought the small business into the River District where it joined the other unique businesses in that corner of Rome. The Hive has been a more mobile business so the move was meant to provide a set location for customers to visit.

“We wanted a way for it to be immediately accessible to people and to be able to teach people about our products,” business owner Liberty Grant said.

The Hive, also known as Hive Holistics online and on social media, makes and sells organic body care and wellness products. Its purpose is to connect people and plants by providing natural remedies and supplies and educating people on how to use them.

It is a one-stop shop for holistic supplies and products, from herbs to creams, ointments, salves, teas, and educational books.

“What I like to say is we’re sort of like a research assistant,” Grant said. “I can’t necessarily tell you what is going to help all your problems, but what I can do is figure out the way you would most likely incorporate it into your life.”

Of all of the shop’s offerings, Grant was most proud of the shop’s zero proof bar. Customers can purchase various drinks at the bar, including iced coffee, tea, wellness shocks, mixed drinks, and draft kombucha.

The new shop, which used to house the Sunflour Bakery, is a unique structure with hexagonal windows and an earthy feel. It was built with terracotta and has a warm, homey atmosphere.

“It matches the other side of what we do here, educate on sustainability,” Grant said.

The bar and shop are open Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, they reopen from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The Hive has been active in the community for years, selling at various events and markets, but it is best known for its event, the RAD Eco and Arts Festival.

The festival takes place in November and brings unique vendors, artists, and wellness mentors to Rome for a vibrant festival.

The festival is held in the River District every year, and Grant is excited to have a permanent place in the area.

“We really love the River Arts District,” Grant said. “We really want to pump it up and get people excited about the district that focuses on creativity.”
