Crews scrape the rubberized material from the top of the Barron Stadium track Monday to determine the extent of the damage caused by a water leak under the surface. Rome Public Works Director Chris Jenkins said the stadium will still be available for sporting events. Adam Carey

The track at Barron Stadium is temporarily closed for repairs after crews discovered a water leak beneath the surface of the track on Monday.

“The safety and quality of our facilities are top priorities,” said Rome Public Works Director Chris Jenkins. “We understand the inconvenience this may cause to our community and appreciate your patience as we work to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. Our goal is to reopen the track to the public as soon as we can, with minimal disruption.”

City maintenance crews began the process on Monday by removing the track surface above the affected area. They’re working to assess the extent of the damage and determine what type of repairs will be required. The closure will remain in place until all repairs are completed.

“The closure of Barron Stadium and the track will not impact any events already scheduled, including the football games for Rome High and Shorter University,” said Rome High School Athletics Director Chris Boden. “We sincerely appreciate the public’s patience and understanding as we undertake necessary repairs. Our goal is to ensure that the track is restored to its best possible condition for everyone who relies on it.”
