Plans Underway For Jimmy Carter’s 100th Birthday
The unthinkable is being thought among those close to Jimmy Carter. The former president, who entered hospice care 16 months ago, may make it to his 100th birthday on Oct. 1. Some are making plans to mark the occasion. Among them is Jill Stuckey, a family friend and superintendent of the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park in the former president’s hometown. She said she visits with him nearly every day. ...

Microdosing candies may be linked to death, illnesses in NY, NJ, other states
The Food and Drug Administration is investigating nearly 50 illnesses — including one possible death — that might be linked to microdosing candies available online and at retailers nationwide. On Tuesday, the FDA initiated a recall for any flavor of Diamond Shruumz brand chocolate bars, cones, and gummies. Officials said 48 people in 24 states — including one person in New York, two in New Jersey and two in Pennsylvania — reported feeling ill after consuming Diamond Shruumz candies. ...
We’ve never seen a storm like Beryl. What the Cat 5 hurricane says about a warmer future
MIAMI— Earliest Category 5 in the Atlantic. Earliest Category 4. Strongest June hurricane. Easternmost June hurricane. First system to undergo rapid intensification in the Atlantic in June. All fresh rewrites of a hurricane record book began in 1851. Beryl, only the second named storm of 2024, is an eye-opening start to what forecasters had predicted could be one of the busiest — and scariest — hurricane seasons ever. The next few months are historically more active. And, for the second year in a row, the...
NW Ga. Civil War Raiders Receiving Posthumous Medals of Honor

Pvts. George D. Wilson and Philip G. Shadrach were among 22 volunteers from the Union Army who commandeered a Confederate locomotive outside of Big Shanty (now Kennesaw) on April 12, 1862, and took it northward toward Chattanooga, Tenn. ...

Rome Recommends Slight Tax Rate Reduction
The Rome Finance Committee recommended a slight reduction in the city’s overall millage rate during a called meeting Tuesday morning. City Manager Sammy Rich and Finance Director Toni Rhinehart spoke to commissioners and presented two scenarios: leave the tax rate the same or adopt a slight reduction. “Inflation is very real right now,” Mayor Craig McDaniel said. “Everything is more expensive and we know our citizens are feeling the pinch.” ...
Ga. High Court Allows Case Against Atrium Health Floyd To Continue
The Georgia Supreme Court ruled that pandemic measures, which suspended court filing deadlines, do not bar a case against Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center from moving forward. The lawsuit filed by Jami Lynn Golden alleges that protocol at the hospital for sepsis infection was ignored by staff when she went for treatment in July 2016, leading to a significant sepsis infection. That infection was later treated at another hospital. However,...

Supreme Court OKs Local Crackdowns on Homelessness, as Advocates Warn of Chaos
The U.S. Supreme Court’s watershed decision on homelessness this past week will make it easier for elected officials and law enforcement authorities nationwide to fine and arrest people who live on streets and sidewalks, in broken-down vehicles, or within city parks — which could have far-reaching health consequences for homeless Americans and their communities. In a 6-to-3 ruling in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, the justices in the majority said allowing the targeting of homeless people occupying public spaces by enforcing bans on public...
Supreme Court Ruling Likely Further Delays Ga. Trump Case
A U.S. Supreme Court decision Monday establishing a legal standard for presidential immunity could further slow down Georgia’s 2020 presidential election interference case, several legal experts predict. The nation’s highest court ruling Monday shields U.S. presidents from criminal prosecution while engaging in “official” conduct related to their “core constitutional” presidential acts and removes immunity if the conduct is unrelated to their “unofficial” responsibilities. The ruling is in response to a federal election interference case brought by the U.S. Department of Justice against Trump, who is...
Around Town: Three Area Residents Have a Real Vote on Biden's Future.
Since just after 9 p.m. Thursday, as a hoarse Joe Biden spoke in the first debate with Donald Trump, some began issuing code red alarms on whether the president had the energy to serve another four-year term. You wouldn’t need a poll to assess the assessment among Rome/Floyd County voters. Trump carried 69% to 70% of the vote in the last two presidential elections here and more of the same is forecast for Nov. 5 no matter who’s on the Democratic side. ...

State removes limits on donations to helping kids aging out of foster care
Limits on donations to a state tax credit that supports foster children aging out of the system were eliminated effective Monday. The General Assembly created the foster-care tax credit last year with a $20 million cap. In its first year, the program raised almost $11.6 million. About 700 young Georgians age out of the foster care system each year, most with no family to return to after they leave the...
Supreme Court shields presidents from prosecution for official acts
WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court ruled Monday that presidents are immune from federal prosecution for official acts, in a sharply divided opinion that wipes out part of the case in Washington alleging that former President Donald Trump committed crimes as part of his attempt to overturn the 2020 election. The 6-3 decision sends the case back to lower courts for more exploration of whether the other charges are official acts for which Trump should be immune, muddling the case and virtually guaranteeing there will be...
How to have a (mostly) bite-free summer
ATHENS — Bloodsuckers. Pests. Nippers. Ankle biters. The nicknames for mosquitoes are as numerous as they are unflattering. After all, no one wants to spend their summers scratching bug bites or slathering on calamine lotion. Sure, mosquitoes are annoying, but they are also one of the most dangerous disease carriers in the world. For such tiny creatures, mosquitoes are responsible for spreading a large variety of diseases, including malaria, West Nile, yellow fever, Zika viruses, Chikungunya and four types of dengue virus. ...
