ROME, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — On July 14, around 8:15 p.m., Rome police were called to a softball league game at Haselton-Wright Park for a verbal dispute.

Police say a man named Theodore Chrystie was arguing with members of an opposing team, and board members of the league asked officers to remove Chrystie.

While Chrystie was talking with officers, the board members then told him he could stay if he stopped being disruptive.

Chrystie agreed and officers stayed for some time at the park afterwards to make sure no more issues happened, Rome police said.

Around 10:45 p.m., players and spectators began to leave the field after the games had finished. Chrystie and other players then began to argue again and someone pulled out a gun, police said.

A struggle then happened and Chrystie was shot in the neck. On July 16, Chrystie died from his injuries.

The gun also was not legally possessed, said police.

As of now, no arrests have been made and no charges have been filed. The investigation is still ongoing, according to police.
