ROME, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Initial reports from the National Weather Service survey team say that it was indeed a tornado that caused the destruction in Rome on Tuesday afternoon, July 16, 2024.

The complete report by the NWS will be released later Wednesday.

The storm that dropped the tornado was a spinning storm that prompted a tornado warning Tuesday first in Cayuga County.

The storm then tracked across the northern half of Onondaga County, northern Madison, and Oneida counties. There was scattered damage all along the storm’s path, but it wasn’t until approximately 3:25 p.m. Tuesday, July 16 that a tornado dropped from the cloud and caused considerable damage in Rome, in Oneida County.

The village of Canastota in Madison County also sustained significant damage. One person was killed as a result of the storm damage.
