Exciting culinary and entertainment shifts continue in Rogers Park, as the neighborhood waves goodbye to Athena Board Game Cafe and welcomes the savory flavors of Nayo African Cuisine. Patricia Gonzalez's Athena, once a destination for board game enthusiasts, shuttered its doors at 1418 W. Howard St. last year. Reflecting on the move, Gonzalez expressed intentions to transplant the interactive cafe experience to a new home in Rogers Park, fortuitously at the historic site once housing Heartland Cafe. "We expect to offer the same products and services that our customers appreciated in the first location in a new, modern building," Gonzalez told the Chicago Sun-Times, charting a course for Athena's reemergence.

It's been a rough tornado season and a new Illinois law is taking aim at that. We can all agree it's been a messy summer. In the Chicago area alone last week, there were 33 tornadoes, compared to their usual 5 or 6 per year. With the derecho that moved through last week, 5 tornadoes rolled through the QCA. In Iowa, May was ridiculous. We average 11 tornadoes in May. But this year, we had over 80 tornadoes in May alone.
Company That Owns Illinois Pizza Huts Files for Bankruptcy
The struggle continues for many food franchises as a company that owns many Pizza Hut locations in Illinois has reportedly filed for bankruptcy. Nation's Restaurant News reported today that EYM Pizza L.P. has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the eastern district of Texas Monday. They said this pizza company "operates units in the South and Midwest". According to their corporate site, that includes Pizza Hut locations in Illinois.
OP Trustees hire firm to create economic vitality plan
Oak Park is working to bolster its economy and ensure both short- and long-term vitality by hiring Camoin Associates, Inc. to create a comprehensive plan. It will take about seven months to create the plan, beginning in July 2024. The consultants plan to visit Oak Park at least three times in that period to conduct focus groups, a community open house and interviews, and to tour local sites.
