RONDA —East Wilkes’ boys basketball team split its final two home regular season games this past week.

That included a 48-29 win against Alleghany last Tuesday night to pick up its third Northwest 1A Conference win this winter.

But on Friday night, the Cardinals saw their senior night spoiled in a 65-53 decision against North Stokes. The Vikings (16-7, 9-2) secured the league’s second automatic bid for the upcoming North Carolina High School Athletic Association playoffs.

In Tuesday’s win, East Wilkes gave up the least amount of points in a game all season that avenged a five-point loss to the Trojans on Jan. 12.

East Wilkes held a 21-8 halftime lead as it allowed single digits to the visitors in three of the four quarters.

Andrew Tharpe led a trio of Cardinals in double figures with 14 points and Brady Hall and Phoenix Blackburn added 10 apiece.

Connor Breon paced Alleghany (9-13, 5-6) with 10 points and Zander Russell chipped in seven.

    Friday’s game

North Stokes led from the opening tip and built the lead to as many as 11 in the opening quarter.

But back-to-back triples from Seth Lambert and Blackburn, coupled with a layup off a steal from Hall, cut the deficit to 15-12 after one quarter following a Lambert layup.

The Cardinals continued to stay within striking distance but the Vikings used a 13-2 run to extend the lead to double digits after an Amos Stanberry basket. The visitors led 37-22 at halftime.

North Stokes maintained a double-digit advantage and extended it to as many as 21 in the fourth quarter.

East Wilkes, headlined by a pair of Logan Brown buckets that included a three-point play, used a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to 64-51 with 4:21 to play.

Will Greer led the Vikings with a game-high 24 points; Stanberry and Cole Hicks added 17 and 13, respectively.

Hall led the Cardinals with 15 points and Tharpe added 10 (all in the third quarter). Owen Combs finished with seven points and Brown and Lambert tallied six apiece.
