The Northwest Regional Library System (NWRL) will be hosting several special events coming up as part of its Writers Road Show. This event, geared toward “bringing authors to readers” will feature author Marjorie Hudson and her book Indigo Field.

The book is set “in the rural South, where a retired colonel in an upscale retirement community grieves the sudden death of his wife on the tennis court. On the other side of the highway, an elderly Black woman grieves the murder of her niece by a white man. Between them lies an abandoned field where three centuries of crimes are hidden, and only she knows the explosive secrets buried there. When the colonel runs into her car, causing a surprising amount of damage, it sparks a feud that sets loose the spirits in the Field, both benevolent and vengeful.”

As the winner of the 2023 Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Fiction, Hudson is now in the company of Ron Rash, Wiley Cash, Reynolds Price, Lee Smith, and others, event organizers said. She’s a dynamic speaker and eager to reach out to the readers of the 13 branch NWRL system. Each stop on the tour features a different aspect of the book.

The Writers Road Show book tour will include three events locally.

The first is planned for April 5 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Elkin Public Library. This “words and music” event will feature local musicians accompanying Hudson’s readings with song selections that reflect the time and setting of her novel Indigo Field.

On April 6, Raffaldini Vineyard, located at 450 Groce Rd. in Ronda, will host a “wine and conversation” event with Hudson from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Hudson will share excerpts from Indigo Field that explore the power of food and its ability to transcend differences and bring people together. Advanced registration is required for this event.

The book tour will conclude with an event at the Mount Airy Public Library, 145 Rockford St., on April 7 from 2 to 4 p.m. At this event Hudson will take the audience down the 30 year road of research and discovery that created the characters and story of Indigo Field.

The Elkin Public Library is featuring Indigo Field as its March book club selection. The book chat is scheduled for Thursday, March 28 at 6:45 p.m.

Copies of Indigo Field are available at local libraries. Pages Books & Coffee in Mount Airy has copies of the book for sale.
