    Pilot, passenger killed in plane crash at LI airport

    RONKONKOMA N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — Suffolk County detectives are investigating a plane crash that killed a pilot and his passenger at MacArthur Airport on Monday evening.

    According to officials, a single engine Beechcraft Bonanza A36 attempted to take off southbound from runway 6 at MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma but crashed while attempting to return to the same runway at 6:14 p.m.

    "The plane got airborne and for some unknown reason, attempted to return to the runway. Upon that return, the plane crashed," Suffolk County Police Lieutenant Kevin Beyer said.

    The pilot and his passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.

    The bodies will be moved to the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner for positive identification.

    The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are responding to the crash.

    The names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
