Amish Coffee Soup Recipe Is An Old Fashioned Breakfast Treat

Today I have such a treat for you!
My Old World Amish neighbors share glimpses of their lifestyle with us, it's taken almost 12 years of fence mending and trading goods together, but what they share with us we absolutely treasure.

Coffee soup is one of those things that varies wildly in the Amish community. From how they make the coffee (real or instant), what they soak it in (bread or saltines), and how they eat it (as is, or with sausage and eggs.) Some eat this just about every morning, while others eat it before church on Sundays.

The recipe I'm going to share today is exactly as I received it from my neighbor. She fixes this before church on Sundays. Again, if this is something you want to try, google has a thousand different recipes you may like better. I actually enjoy this recipe, as strange as it may seem to people who aren't amish.

    Old-World Amish Coffee Soup

    Ingredients

    • One cup of milk per person
    • A sprinkle of instant coffee.
    • Sugar
    • Saltine crackers
    • Sausage (optional)
    • Scrambled eggs (optional)

    Directions

    • Heat your milk to boiling, take it off the burner immediately.
    • Take your instant coffee and add JUST A SPRINKLE. You don't want it bitter, and you want the color to be very very light brown. Whisk well.
    • Sprinkle in a little sugar and whisk well.
    • Crush saltine crackers (or bread) and put them in a bowl, pour your coffee milk mixture over the crackers until they're just covered.
    • Add your sausage and eggs on top, if you are adding them.

Alternatively, you can butter your saltines and soak them in your coffee soup. You can also make fresh coffee, add milk or cream to the bowl, and soak your crackers or bread.
