Illinois Officials Question Alton Mine Collapse and Future Safety Plans
The collapse of a mine on June 26, 2024, in Gordon Moore Park, Alton, Illinois, has alarmed local officials and residents. The falling apart resulted in a large sinkhole in the park’s soccer fields. With dimensions nearly 200 feet wide and 50 feet deep, the hole kept growing after several rains disrupted sports events and camps scheduled for the summer.
Harlem-Roscoe Fire will transition to full-time staff in August
The Harlem-Roscoe Fire Department is transitioning to a 24/7 full-time staffed department effective August 1, 2024, supplemented with part time personnel. Harlem-Roscoe Fire Chief John Bergeron says, "This transition marks a new era for Harlem-Roscoe Fire Department." Bergeron says residents will see "faster, more reliable service." The department's on premise shift schedule will increase to 12 paid staff per day, allowing for more continuous coverage.

Galesburg girl wins Li’l Miss Illinois pageant
There she is, Li’l Miss Illinois. That person is Kynleigh Fox of Galesburg, who was recently named Li’l Miss Illinois 2024 through the Miss Illinois Youth Program. Fox, daughter of Stacy Dunham, took part in the pageant recently as Li’l Miss Knox County. Fox recently turned 9 years old and will be a fourth grader at Galesburg Christian School. Among the activities she was required to take part included a talent – she danced – and an interview. Fox aced it as she was named Overall Top Interview.

Coach Tara Backes's softball team hasn't seen any serious competition all weekend at the State Tourney in Evergreen Park. Backes told us the 8 – 10 year old All-Stars beat Twin Rivers – in the early game Saturday – 10 – 0. Ekko Baima had a triple and eight out of eleven players provided hits. Quinn Holman pitched three innings and Maeve Brandt pitched one inning in the four inning game.
