HIGGINS LAKE – A Higgins Lake man died in an ORV accident early this morning, according to a statement from Roscommon County Sheriff’s Office. At around 5 a.m. today, Roscommon County Central Dispatch received a call from a motorist advising that they observed a subject lying in the ditch on Old 27 near Myrtle Ave. in Lyon Township.
ATV driver killed in crash, deputies believe alcohol and speed were factors
ROSCOMMON COUNTY — Around 5 a.m. Monday morning, Roscommon County Central Dispatch got a call about a person lying in a ditch. Deputies arrived at the scene on Old 27 near Myrtle Avenue in Lyon Township to find an ATV had crashed sometime overnight. They said the driver, Kevin Lee Barnes from Higgins Lake, was heading north on Old 27 when he hit something on the shoulder. The ATV went into the ditch, hit a tree and Barnes was thrown off. Barnes was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies said they believe alcohol and speed were a factor.

9 people injured, driver killed in Roscommon Co. crash involving 3 cars
HIGGINS LAKE — On Monday, July 8, officers from the Gerrish Township Police Department responded to a serious three-car crash on East Higgins Lake Drive. Police said around 3 p.m., a driver in a gold Dodge Grand Caravan was headed north when they crossed the centerline and hit a gray Ford F-150 headed south. The F-150 rolled and landed upside down. The Grand Caravan also hit a Black Chevy Silverado behind the F-150. In total, nine people from four different townships were taken to the hospital by ambulance. The Grand Caravan driver, who police said likely suffered a medical emergency, did not survive.
