ROSCOMMON — The Roscommon County Sheriff’s Office said a suspect is in custody after an armed stand-off Thursday afternoon.

Deputies responded to North Central Drive in Higgins Township around 2 p.m. for a complaint of shots fired. They said the suspect had several warrants for his arrest.

A member of his household called to report that he had been shooting off guns in the backyard even though he was a convicted felon who wasn’t allowed to possess weapons.

When deputies made contact, they said he was uncooperative, combative and ultimately barricaded himself inside the house. Law enforcement established that he had multiple guns and was likely under the influence of illegal narcotics.

The Northern Michigan Emergency Response Team tried to negotiate with the man to come out peacefully. After a seven-hour standoff, the team forced their way inside.

Deputies said the man was found in a hidden well pit with a loaded handgun nearby. Another gun was also found in the home.

On Friday, he was charged with prohibited possession of a firearm and ammo, assaulting/resisting/obstructing police, possessing a firearm during a felony, and habitual offender – fourth offense.
