    Lady Cougars compete in own tournament

    The weekend of August 22-24, the Rosebud-Lott Lady Cougars volleyball team hosted an in-season tournament. The Lady Cougars finished the tournament with a record of 3-3.

    Rosebud-Lott played three games on Thursday; the first game was against the Milano Lady Eagles. Rosebud-Lott was swept 2-0, losing the first set 25-15 and the second set 25-18.

    The second game of the day was against the Wortham Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Cougars swept Wortham, winning the first set 27-25 and the second set 25-20. Their final game of the day was against the Valley Mills Lady Eagles. Rosebud-Lott defeated Valley Mills 2-1 in a game that went back and forth.

    The first three points of the first set went to Rosebud-Lott, then Valley Mills rallied back and tied the set at 3. The Lady Cougars stopped their momentum with a tip over kill by Gracie Doskocil (4) to regain the lead 4-3. The set stayed even until Rosebud-Lott gained an 8-5 advantage. The Lady Cougars continued to stay on top with a kill by Aniah Cavitt (10) to make it an 11-9 lead. They remained aggressive on offense with a big spike by Kaitlyn Jenkins (7) to make it a 15-13 lead.

    Valley Mills tried to crawl back but was shut down with a big block from Doskocil and Aniah Cavitt to make the score 19-17 Rosebud-Lott.

    Valley Mills continued to claw back and surged ahead 24-20. Rosebud-Lott tried to fight back and tightened the score 24-23 on an ace by Doskocil, but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Eagles took the first set 25-23.

    Valley Mills brought their momentum into the second set and scored the first three points. Rosebud-Lott broke the drought with a kill by Brooke Skala (9) to make the score 3-1. Valley Mills began to pull away, taking an 8-1 lead. The Lady Cougars still kept fighting with two consecutive aces by Kinsley Edwards (8) to make it a 10-5 deficit. Rosebud-Lott continued to close the gap with a block by Aniah Cavitt to make the score 10-7. The Lady Cougars stayed alive with an ace by Jenkins to only trail 14-11, and made the score 14-13 on a big kill by Brightan Willberg (6).

    The Lady Cougars caught up with Valley Mills and tied the set at 18 on a block by Willberg and Brooke Skala. The Lady Cougars took the lead 19-18 on an ace by Doskocil and increased their lead to 22-18. Valley Mills rallied back and made the score 22-21, but the Lady Cougars held strong to win the second set 25-21 aided by an ace from Willberg.

    Rosebud-Lott started the third set strong, scoring the first four points and would lead 7-4. The Lady Cougars stayed aggressive with a spike by Aniah Cavitt for an 8-5 lead. Valley Mills would make the score 8-7, but Jenkins answered with two straight points off a kill then an ace to take a 10-7 advantage. Valley Mills stormed back again and pushed ahead 15-12.

    Rosebud-Lott answered with a kill by Brooke Skala for a 15-13 deficit, then soon tied the set at 15 with an ace by Willberg. The Lady Cougars continued their great serving and retook the lead 17-16 on another ace by Edwards. The Lady Eagles fought their way back again and led 22-19, but Rosebud-Lott responded in a big way, scoring a six point surge to win the third set 25-22 and win the match.

    On Friday, Rosebud-Lott took a break from the tournament as they traveled to play the Troy Trojannettes. They were defeated by Troy 3-0, losing the first set 25-11, the second set 25-15, and the third set 25-18. Rosebud-Lott played three games on Saturday; the first game was against the Bremond Lady Tigers. They were swept by Bremond 2-0, losing the first set 25-16 and the second set 25-11.

    The second game of the day was against the Wortham Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Cougars swept Wortham, winning the first set 25-19 and the second set 25-22. Their final game of the day was against the Valley Mills Lady Eagles. Valley Mills got their revenge and swept Rosebud-Lott 2-0. The Lady Cougars lost the first set 25-22 and the second set 25-14.

    After playing the Moody Lady Cats on the road Tuesday, the Lady Cougars will travel to play the Groesbeck Lady Goats. The game will be on Friday, Aug. 30, and is set for 4:30 p.m.
