D Brown Library celebrates 75th anniversary
Even though it “rained on their parade,” the Wednesday Study Club of Rosebud provided a 75th Anniversary celebration for the D Brown Library in grand style. The city was without power, but thanks to City Administrator Ken Murray along with Emergency Management Coordinator Owen Smith, a generator provided electricity to the D Brown Library and the event was able to continue. President Pat Runcie welcomed guests into the beautifully decorated Community Room. Early voting underway in local elections
Early voting began Monday, April 22 for municipal, school board and various bond elections. It ends on April 30 with Saturday, May 4 being election day. What is on the ballot depends on where you live. There are various ways to learn what is on the local ballot. One way is by going to the following link: https://tinyurl.com/nhbyhnyu. Wednesday Study Club makes final preparations for 75th D Brown Library reception
The Wednesday Study Club met on April 10, 2024, at the D Brown Library with eleven members present. Pat Runcie called the meeting to order. Flag pledges were recited with an invocation given by Norma Burns. The main order of business was to update everyone on the reception preparations. Earlier in the month, Carol Stock sent out formal invitations to city and county officials. Mary Ann Mitchell printed flyers, which members took to hand deliver to various businesses in town. The Falls County Commissioners Court met at the County Courthouse on Monday, April 8, with County Judge Jay Elliott presiding. Commissioners present were Milton Albright (Pct. 1), F.A. ‘Aggressive’ hurricane forecast for Gulf Coast
Colorado State University researchers are calling this year’s hurricane season forecast “the most aggressive” ever, the Texas Standard reported. They say there is a 54% chance a hurricane will strike the Texas coast, and a 25% chance it will be major. Justin Ballard, the Houston Chronicle’s newsroom meteorologist, told the Texas Standard that the last hurricane to make landfall was Nicholas in 2021. Last week the Rosebud-Lott boys and girls track teams participated in an area track meet hosted by Bosqueville High School. The Lady Cougars finished in seventh place with 41 points. The 43rd annual Rosebud High School Golden Years reunion was held in Rosebud on Saturday, April 6, and members of Preservation Rosebud opened the museum for a reception to honor them. , Preservation Rosebud met on Thursday, March 21, for a very special evening. President Les Heugatter called the meeting to order and welcomed guest speaker Beverly Ann Stone to the museum. Ms. Stone was accompanied by Trudie Asbury and Robert Lowry, all from the Falls County Historical Commission in Marlin. James Prothro’s introduction of Ms. Stone earned an enthusiastic round of applause. Her impressive background includes a career at Southwestern Bell and AT&T in Houston. Rosebud will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the D Brown Memorial Library Sunday April 28, beginning at 2 p.m. with a power point presentation telling about the Library’s Community Room followed by a reception. Golden Years celebrates new outpatient therapy gym
On March 20, 2024, Golden Years Nursing & Rehabilitation celebrated the Grand Opening of their new Outpatient Therapy Gym. While Golden Years has provided excellent Skilled Nursing care in Marlin for over 60 years, they recently expanded their therapy department to fill the gap that was left with the closing of the Falls Community PT department. They are offering physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy in an outpatient setting. The Rosebud-Lott Lady Cougars softball team hosted the Milano Lady Eagles on Friday, March 22. The Lady Cougars defeated Milano in eight innings, winning 3-2 in walkoff fashion. The first seven innings was a pure pitchers duel, as the game was still scoreless going into the eighth inning. Both pitchers were fantastic, and when they got themselves in a jam, they found a way out. The Rosebud-Lott Cougars baseball team hosted the Bremond Tigers on Tuesday, March 12. The Cougars shut out Bremond, winning 11-0 in five innings. Wildfires impacting Panhandle ranchers but not overall cattle and beef prices
Wildfires in the Texas Panhandle caused significant cattle losses for individual ranchers, but should not impact beef cattle markets or consumers, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service expert. David Anderson, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension economist in the Texas A&M Department of Agricultural Economics, Bryan-College Station, said it may be weeks before there are estimates for lost cattle, but he expects the impact of the wildfire to be localized. Cool-season crops doing well thanks to fall rain
Cool-season crops like leafy greens, carrots, cabbage and onions appear to be producing well as harvest continues, according to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service experts. These crops, typically planted from September through February, are harvested from late fall into early spring. Last year, the second hottest summer for Texas, was followed by a mercifully mild and fairly wet fall, which brought producers some relief and allowed them to plant winter crops.
