Largest wildfire in state history still raging
A wildfire in the Texas Panhandle has consumed more than 1 million acres and as of Sunday was just 15% contained, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service. It is the largest wildfire in Texas history. The Smokehouse Creek Fire is by far the most extensive of several blazes, which also include the Grape Vine Creek Fire in Gray County, covering 30,000 acres and 60% contained, and the Windy Deuce Fire in Moore County, which covers 142,000 acres and was 60% contained. The Falls County Commissioners Court met at the County Courthouse on Monday, Feb. 26, with County Judge Jay Elliott presiding. Commissioners present were Milton Albright (Pct. 1), F. A. South Texas citrus poised for a comeback
The Texas citrus crop quality and quantity was better than expected following multiple seasons of weather-related setbacks, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service expert. Texas is the third largest citrus producer in the U.S., with the total economic impact of the citrus industry to the state exceeding $300 million annually. With increased fruit prices, cash receipts for citrus farmers recently exceeded $200 million. Texas A&M AgriLife research included in global drought study
A first-of-its-kind international study, which includes research from Texas A&M AgriLife, has found that the effects of extreme drought on grasslands and shrublands have been underestimated. Researchers simulated extreme short-term drought – commonly called “100-year drought” – at 100 sites across six continents. Realignment shrinks Cougars football district
Starting next year for the 2024-2025 season, the Rosebud-Lott Cougars and Lady Cougars sports team will be having a new set of district opponents. As of now, the UIL has posted the new district reclassification and realignment for football, basketball, and volleyball. Rosebud-Lott will not switch conferences and will remain in 2A. First up, the Rosebud-Lott football team. The Cougars will remain in 2A Division 1, but they will be moving from Region 2 District 8 to Region 4 District 13. n BY adam russell Texas A&M AgriLife Football fans should expect slightly higher chicken wing prices this year as more than one billion wings are expected to be eaten during Super Bowl LVIII, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service expert. The National Chicken Council estimates 1.45 billion chicken wings and drumsticks will be consumed during the Feb. 11 football game between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers for the Lombardi Trophy. Rosebud-Lott held their first ever powerlifting invitational this past Saturday at RL. The Rosebud-Lott Cougars basketball team hosted an in-season tournament Dec. 25-27. The Cougars finished the weekend with a record of 1-2. They played two games on Thursday; the first game was against the Killeen Kangaroos JV team. The Cougars fell to Killeen, losing 43-37. Their second game came against the Rogers Eagles. And when the holidays are over, there are several eco-friendly ways to dispose of or recycle that ornamental piece of holiday tradition. Lady Cougars fiinish in fourth place in Cameron Tournament
The weekend of Dec. 7-9, the Rosebud-Lott Lady Cougars basketball team participated in an in-season tournament hosted by Cameron. The Lady Cougars finished with a record of 2-2 and finished in fourth place. Rosebud-Lott played one game on Thursday against the Bartlett Lassies. The Lady Cougars handily defeated Bartlett 40-27. Rosebud-Lott played one game on Friday in a match against the Travis Lady Rebels, where they defeated Travis 45-26. With these two wins, the Lady Cougars moved into the championship bracket. On Saturday, they took on the Stephenville Honeybees in the semifinals and were defeated. The Lady Cougars took on the Valley Mills Lady Eagles for third place, and they fell to Valley Mills to finish in fourth place. After a road game with the Bruceville-Eddy Lady Eagles on Tuesday for their district opener, the Lady Eagles will host the Chilton Lady Pirates for their distinct home opener. The game will be on Friday, Dec. 15, and tip off is set for 6:30 p.m.
Mart ends Chilton’s spectacular 2023 season
The Chilton Pirates fell to the Mart Panthers in the Semifinal round of the playoffs on Friday night. The Pirates traveled to Crusader Stadium at Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton on Dec. 8 for the Semifinals. They took on the Mart Panthers and were defeated, falling 38-24 to bring their amazing season to an end. Chilton received the ball to start the game.
