Texas Christmas tree production continues to hold strong despite impacts from extreme drought, according to a Texas A&M Forest Service expert. Fred Raley, Ph.D., Texas A&M Forest Service tree improvement coordinator, said he is expecting another year of high demand for Christmas trees. Chilton keeps season alive with win over Falls City
The Chilton Pirates football team traveled to Bob Shelton Stadium in Buda on Friday, Dec. 1, for the Quarterfinals. They took on the Falls City Beavers and were victorious, obliterating them 53-7 to advance and keep their season alive. The Pirates started the game red hot and never looked back, shutting out Falls City 46-0 in the first half. The second half was more even with both teams scoring just seven points in the second half. Holiday costs expected to be lower this year
Traditional holiday meals should be less expensive than last year’s record-high prices, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service expert. AgriLife Extension livestock marketing economist, Bryan-College Station, expects consumers to find lower prices on turkeys and other holiday baking items this season. The Falls County Commissioners Court met at the County Courthouse in Marlin on Monday, Nov. 27, with County Judge Jay Elliott presiding. Commissioners present were Milton Albright (Pct. 1), F.A. Green (Pct. 2), Jason Willberg (Pct. 3) and Nita Wuebker (Pct. 4). A community unites for Thanksgiving
, On Nov. 19 the community of Rosebud came together for a successful communitywide Thanksgiving dinner at the Rosebud community center. Eight of the local churches united and worked together for this evening of singing, fellowship, and an old-fashioned meal of turkey, dressing and all the fixings. The success of this is due in part to the collaborative effort of a newly formed group of five to six local ministers called the “ministerial alliance”. Avian influenza not expected to disrupt Thanksgiving turkey prices and stock
After just a three to four month break from avian influenza, the poultry industry is reeling again from another outbreak that has swept across the U.S., but this one isn’t expected to disrupt holiday turkey prices as much as last year. The outbreak began in early October, said Greg Archer, Ph.D., Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service poultry specialist and associate professor in the Texas A&M Department of Poultry Science, Bryan-College Station. Lady Cougars advance to Regional Quarterfinals
The Rosebud-Lott Lady Cougars volleyball team has advanced to the Regional Quarterfinals of the playoffs. The ladies traveled to Lorena last Tuesday on Halloween night for a Bi-District matchup with the Bruceville-Eddy Lady Eagles. The Lady Cougars swept Bruceville-Eddy 3-0, winning all three sets 25-14 to advance to the next round. On Thursday, Nov. 2, Rosebud-Lott traveled to Axtell to face the Frost Lady Bears in the area round. Superheroes attend District Workshop
Members of the Falls County Retired Teachers Chapter recently attended the Fall Workshop at the Region 12 Education Service Center in Waco. The theme, “Superheroes for 70 Years” commemorates the number of years of advocating for improving benefits for all education retirees and promotes the well-being of all its members. Jo Ann Sugg of Coryell County is the District 12 President. Elizabeth Richardson represented the local chapter as District 12 Retirement Education Chair. The fiscal year report indicated chapters volunteered 285,000 hours in community service, 10,000 in book donations to elementary schools and in twelve chapters, $15,000 in scholarships. The members are gearing up for the April 15-17, 2024, TRTA State Convention in Corpus Christi. FC TRTA Membership is open to retirees who receive a monthly annuity from Teacher Retirement System (TRS). However now, it is not limited for teachers only. Cougars fall to Marlin
The Rosebud-Lott Cougars football team hosted the Marlin Bulldogs on Friday, Oct. 27. The Cougars were shut out by Marlin, losing 34-0. The Bulldogs overpowered Rosebud-Lott in the first half, going into halftime leading 27-0. The Rosebud-Lott defense held the Bulldog offense to just seven points in the second half, but continued their struggles on offense, remaining scoreless in the game in order to lose 34-0. Pryce Rabroker had some struggles Friday, throwing for 50 yards along with an interception, and Jamarquis Johnson caught six passes for 26 yards and a touchdown. With this loss, the Cougars have a record of 3-6 and a district record of 3-3. Up next for Rosebud-Lott, they travel to take on the Moody Bearcats for their regular season finale. The game will be on Friday, Nov. 3, and kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Texas orange production shows an increase in price

Supply decreases due to weather were the primary cause of higher prices. The drought this is only added on to the damage done by Hurricane Ian in September 2022. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated the storm caused losses of one-third of the crop. Also, orange production in Brazil dipped slightly this year due to drought. The Rosebud-Lott Lady Cougars volleyball team traveled to take on the Bremond Lady Tigers on Friday. The Rosebud-Lott Cougars clinched a playoff spot on Friday night with a win over Bosqueville. The Cougars were victorious, soundly defeating Bosqueville 45-21. The Cougars sent the homecoming crowd home happy with a dominant win over the Eagles 61-6.
