Local Obon unites more than just ancestors
An entrancing set of vocals, heard alongside other voices, drew locals towards the Enmanji Buddhist Temple in Sebastopol on Saturday evening. Gathered in the center of the temple’s courtyard, community members danced beside one another to commemorate and show respect for their ancestors. An Obon is a long-practiced summer tradition, where song and dance are used to connect with an individual’s roots and honor their ancestors, but while it’s a multi-generational tradition for many, dancers from all backgrounds, ages and ethnicities were welcome. A diverse range of individuals showed their confidence as they danced in both Kimonos and street clothes in unison and with grace.

This is already a terrible weekend for California wildfires, as the Park Fire in Butte and Tehama counties has now burnt up more than 348,000 acres, making it the seventh-largest wildfire in California history. Thousands evacuate season's biggest wildfire in northern California
A huge, fast-moving and rapidly growing wildfire in northern California has forced more than 4,000 people to evacuate as firefighters battle gusty winds and perilously dry conditions, authorities said Friday.
