Roselle Park Mayor and Council Introduces Ordinance to Lower Sewer Bill Costs

ROSELLE PARK, NJ — For Roselle Park residents upset about their sewer bill this year, Roselle Park Mayor and Council may have just ensured that it will be a one-time occurrence, as they introduced an ordinance would change the way that sewer bills are calculated at their last meeting on Thursday, July 18.

This ordinance was first mentioned at last week's town hall meeting when Mayor Joseph Signorello III announced that going forward, the borough will likely calculate water usage based on the final three months of the prior year prorated out to the full year.

Specifically, the ordinance states that, effective January 1 of next year, "the water consumption in cubic feet" will be reported by the New Jersey Water Company for the "final three months of the preceding year annualized by multiplying the three-month consumption figure four times." As these are winter months, residents with pools or who water their lawns frequently will not be disproportionally charged.

This, combined with the $3 million in aid that the borough has obtained towards paying the settlement , the council hopes to provide some much-needed relief for residents who were blindsided this year by a sewer bill spike as the result of a settled lawsuit with Elizabeth .

“This year Roselle Park was hit with unforeseen costs to its sewer utility based on infrastructure decisions made over 100 years ago,” said Roselle Park Mayor Joseph Signorello III. “This aid is going to stabilize the present situation, and deliver much-needed relief to local ratepayers."
