ROSELLE PARK, NJ — The borough grew a little brighter recently, as Union County Connects, a 501(c)(3) charity that advocates for safer trail networks in Union County, unveiled a brand-new mural featuring a historical rendition of the Rahway Valley Railroad Engines. Painted on the Son-Rise Document Solutions building at the outskirts of the borough, the mural welcomes travelers into Roselle Park.

The mural was created by a Jersey City-based street artist, known as "Distort" , who has composed many murals throughout New Jersey. Roselle Park Councilmember Jay Robaina also spoke at the event.

It commemorates the Rahway Valley Railroad, which was a short-line railroad that connected the Lehigh Valley Railroad in Roselle Park and the Central Railroad of New Jersey in Cranford with the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western in Summit and operated for 95 years after its opening in 1897. It was known as one of the most successful short line railroads in U.S. history, being one of the few that turned a profit during the Great Depression.

Also this week: school might be out, that does not mean that the work is over for the Roselle Park Board of Education. Last week, they met to receive a presentation on Ethics 2024 Training from Jeanne Cleary and Patricia Rees of the New Jersey School Board Association.

The presentation focused on how members of the board can continue to conduct themselves ethically within their role and maintain public trust. "As school officials, you have the honor of serving the public," said Ms. Cleary. "Tonight, we wanted to look at how we hold ourselves accountable."

Some of the ways that the board were advised to behave ethically are: enforcing all school rules and regulations equally, make decisions with the intention to better the educational welfare of children, make no personal promises nor make an individual or private action that comprimises the consensus of the board and more.
