    Farmington baseball team remains undefeated

There could be a solo leader in South Suburban Conference softball by the end of the week.

Rosemount and Farmington have been tied for first place since April 17, with both 9-1 going into their games Wednesday (which were played after this edition went to press). If they remain tied after Wednesday, they’ll break it when they meet at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Rosemount High School.

Last week Rosemount was first and Farmington second in the state fastpitch coaches association Class 4A rankings. Lest anyone think the South Suburban has become a two-team race, keep in mind Shakopee (ranked fourth in the state) went into Wednesday’s games at 8-2 in the league.

Farmington’s only loss was 3-2 in 10 innings against Rosemount on April 11. Rosemount lost to Lakeville South 6-4 on April 17. Lakeville South was fourth in the South Suburban at 6-4 going into Wednesday’s games.

Shakopee has lost to Rosemount and Farmington but has a game remaining against each team in the second half of the conference schedule.

Jorey Fry of Rosemount and Marissa Mittelstadt of Farmington pitched 10-inning complete games when their teams played April 11. Rosemount catcher Grace Nosan singled in the 10th inning to score the deciding run.

On Tuesday, Rosemount defeated Lakeville North 9-1 as senior infielder Ari Princl went 3-for-4 with two doubles, four runs batted in and two runs scored. Bryn Anderson and Kayla Bartol drove in two runs each and Fry was the winning pitcher

Farmington survived an upset bid by Burnsville on Tuesday, coming back to win 7-5 after trailing 5-2 after 4 1/2 innings. In the bottom of the fifth, three Farmington runners scored on wild pitches and Hannah Hansen had an RBI single as the Tigers took the lead for the first time.

Katie Klotz had two hits and two RBIs for Farmington. Sidney Handrahan, Miley LaMotte and Katie Dam had two hits each for Burnsville (2-8 SSC, 2-9 overall), and Gracie Johnson homered.

    Saturday tournaments

Lakeville North and Eagan are scheduled to hold invitational softball tournaments Saturday.

The Lakeville North tourney starts at 8 a.m. at Aronson Park. The varsity bracket includes Watertown-Mayer, Visitation, Holy Family, Delano, Winona Cotter, Bloomington Jefferson and Ellsworth, Wisconsin.

Blaine, Bloomington Kennedy, Champlin Park, Hopkins, Owatonna, Two Rivers and Wayzata are scheduled for the varsity bracket at the Eagan tournament at Northview Park.

    SSC baseball

Farmington entered the week as one of only two undefeated teams in Class 4A baseball, and the Tigers held a two-game lead in the South Suburban Conference.

Farmington is ranked second in the state baseball coaches association Class 4A poll, with Wayzata – the other unbeaten team in the enrollment class – at No. 1.

The Tigers improved to 9-0 with a 4-0 victory at Rosemount on April 25. It continued a remarkable season for Farmington junior Joe Baldus, who pitched his third consecutive complete-game shutout. In 21 innings he has allowed eight hits and five walks while striking out 17. He threw a no-hitter against Burnsville in his first start of the season.

Ty Beck had an RBI single and Tanner Renzy doubled in a run during Farmington’s four-run first inning against Rosemount.

The Tigers were scheduled to return to action Wednesday at Lakeville South. They play Eastview on Thursday and Burnsville on Friday, both on the road.
