Irish boys title is school’s first in 33 years

The South Suburban Conference regular-season golf schedule concluded with one familiar team champion and one that hasn’t been able to put its name on a conference trophy in decades.

Eastview clinched its fourth consecutive SSC girls championship by taking first in the final conference tournament May 23 at The Wilds in Prior Lake. Rosemount won four of the five South Suburban boys tournaments, including the finale May 22 at Meadows at Mystic Lake, to win its first championship in any conference since 1991.

Eastview’s girls won three of the four conference regular-season tournaments, with Farmington taking the other. The Lightning closed with an emphatic 37-stroke victory at The Wilds, and Lightning senior Megan Young was individual medalist with even-par 72, a career best. She had two birdies and two bogeys.

The Lightning had a 329 team total, with counting scores turned in by Young, Addison Schafer (82), Serafina Swanson (85) and Addison Hedrick (90). Anna Pitts (93) and Haley Rasmussen (98) also played for Eastview at The Wilds.

Young faced strong competition for the individual medal despite shooting her career-best score. Lakeville South senior Jovie Ordal (73), Apple Valley senior Avary Johnson (75) and Eagan junior Bridget Behles (78) also shot in the 70s. Ordal had finished first at two of the previous three conference matches and Johnson won the other.

Lakeville North was second at the May 23 SSC girls tourney, one stroke ahead of Rosemount and two ahead of Farmington. Sophomore Olivia Hanson led the Panthers with an 84. Rosemount ninth-grader Alyssa Fitzgerald shot 86 and sophomore Gabi Peterson shot 87. Farmington was led by ninth-grader Scarlett Hedrick, who shot 89.

Behles led Eagan to fifth in the team competition, and Johnson was the top player for sixth-place Apple Valley. Ordal was the leading player for seventh-place Lakeville South. Bailey Tilley shot 90 for Burnsville, which was 10th in the team standings.

Rosemount’s boys finished three strokes ahead of Eagan at the final SSC boys tournament at Meadows at Mystic Lake. Irish sophomore Connor Stacy tied Logan Remmers of Shakopee for medalist, with each shooting 1-over-par 73. Eagan senior Michael Johnson and Farmington junior Cale Thompson tied for third at 76 and Rosemount players Joey Mackinac and Austin Eaton were part of a four-way tie for fifth place at 77.

Farmington, led by Thompson, tied for third in the team standings at Meadows at Mystic Lake. Lakeville North’s Brody Baker shot 77 to tie for fifth, and he and Jordan Ziehr (78) led the Panthers to a sixth-place team finish.

Jordan Brothers shot 78, leading Eastview to a tie for seventh place. Also tying for seventh was Lakeville South, led by Ty Johnson’s 78.

T.J. Robb shot 82 for ninth-place Apple Valley and Spencer Miller turned in an 82 for 10th-place Burnsville.

Stacy, Johnson and Thompson tied for first in a May 8 conference tournament at Crystal Lake in Lakeville, with each shooting 73. Johnson and Farmington’s Jaden Kelly each shot 70 to tie for second at a May 17 SSC event at Stonebrooke in Shakopee. Landon Roeller of Lakeville North and Farmington’s Thompson tied for first on May 13 at Valleywood in Apple Valley, with each shooting 1-under 70.

    JV ace

Eastview ninth-grader Ellery Wilbur scored a hole in one at Eastview’s season-ending girls junior varsity invitational May 23 at Valleywood. She aced the 130-yard seventh hole with a 7-iron.

Spring Lake Park won the 12-team invitational by 14 strokes, with Lakeville North, Rosemount and Eastview placing second through fourth.

    Section meets

Some schedule changes are in place for this week’s Class 3A, Section 3 golf tournament. Competition begins Thursday at Loggers Trail Golf Club in Stillwater, with boys tee times starting at 8:30 a.m. and girls tee times beginning at 11. Second round of the 36-hole tournament is Friday at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids.

In past years, both rounds were played at Bunker Hills with the first round on a Friday and the final 18 holes the following Monday.

Rosemount (18th), St. Thomas Academy (21st) and Eagan (24th) are Section 3 teams in the top 25 of the Minnesota Golf Association’s all-class boys state high school team rankings. Top-ranked individual in the section is Eagan senior Michael Johnson at No. 17.

No. 6 East Ridge is the top-ranked team in the Section 3 girls tourney. South Suburban Conference champion Eastview is at No. 14. Reese McCauley of Simley, the state’s top-ranked player, is the Section 3 individual favorite. Avary Johnson of Apple Valley is ranked 23nd by the MGA

Rochester Mayo pulled away from the field in the final round of the Class 3A, Section 1 boys tournament Wednesday at The Jewel in Lake City. The Spartans were tied with Northfield after Tuesday's opening round, with Lakeville North two strokes behind and Lakeville South four back. Mayo had a 291 team score in the second round and went on to a 12-stroke victory.

Lakeville South tied for third, 22 strokes behind Mayo. Senior Mitchell Platt was the Cougars' top player, shooting 74-77--151 to tie for seventh place individually. South players Ty Johnson and Zach Havron had 155 totals and were two of the four players tied for 13th.

Lakeville North was sixth in the team competition. The Panthers' top individual was junior Brody Baker, who shot 74-79--153 to finish 10th.

Farmington was eighth in the team standings after the first round, and only the top seven advance to the second round. But two Tigers players advanced individually, and junior Cale Thompson qualified for the state tournament by finishing third. He shot 73 in both rounds for a 4-over-par 146 total.

Farmington and Northfield were tied for first after Tuesday's opening round of the Class 3A, Section 1 girls tournament at Cannon Golf Club. The final round will be Thursday.

Lakeville North was fifth after the opening round and advanced to the final round. Lakeville South did not reach the final round as a team after tying for ninth in the first round.

Lakeville South senior Jovie Ordal qualified for Day 2 individually after shooting 78 in the first round, which had her tied for second place. Ordal is fifth in the Minnesota Golf Association girls high school individual rankings.
