DNR Looking for Help with Annual Turkey Survey
(Lewis) The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is asking for the public’s help with its wild turkey production survey for July and August. John Lorenzen, with the DNR Office in Lewis, says participants are to note the date and the county where the turkey was seen, mark down if it is an adult female or male, and indicate the number of poults present. Lorenzen says the DNR uses the information to gauge next year’s population in part by nest success.

The Des Moines Register's sister paper, the Evening Tribune, reports on July 2, 1919, that the Iowa Legislature in a special session has added the state to the growing roll of those in support of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. That amendment, ratified the following year, gave women the full right to vote. Iowa women had long been prominent in the suffrage movement. Today in Iowa, women hold two of four congressional seats, one of two U.S. Senate seats and the governor's office.

Trial for man accused of killing Algona police officer begins Monday
SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa — Thefirst-degree murder trial of a man accused of killing Algona Police Officer Kevin Cram is set to begin Monday in Dickinson County. The flooding in northwestern Iowa has forced a delay in Kyle Ricke's trial, which was moved from Algona to Spirit Lake. Ricke's defense team asked for a continuance because one of his lawyers was dealing with flooding in their home, and there were also concerns that potential jurors in Dickinson County would need to focus their time and energy on flood recovery.
Willie Ray's Q Shack sets up shop in Spencer after floods
SPENCER, Iowa (KWWL) -- Willie Ray's Q Shack arrived in Spencer, Iowa this afternoon, to help with meals after devastating flooding in the area. It's the ninth trip for the volunteers. KWWL is told they raised around four grand for the trip, which will last through next Tuesday. The crew plans to return on Wednesday.
