Second man arrested in the shooting of a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A second man has been arrested in the shooting of a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper, authorities said. Trooper Adam Cothron stopped a Kia Forte driven by Timothy Davis Jr. on Interstate 40 on Friday. When he approached, Davis shot Cothron, critically wounding him, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a news release. The trooper remained hospitalized Tuesday, the agency said.
Bell Wins Steeplechase, Named All Pan-Am at World Games
Drew Bell of Madison made the All Pan-American Masters team with his record-setting performance in five events, including a win in the 3000m Steeplechase. Bell, 58, is head coach for the James Clemens High School cross-country and track-field teams. The Pan Am Masters Games, held July 12-21 in Cleveland, featured more than 9,000 athletes from 70 countries. Athletes competed in 29 sports categories with multiple events in each.
Judge approves referendum sought by slave descendants to challenge rezoning of island community
SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A judge on Tuesday approved a referendum sought by residents of one of the South’s last remaining Gullah-Geechee communities of slave descendants, ordering an Oct. 1 special election on whether to overturn zoning changes that Black residents see as a threat to an island enclave founded by enslaved ancestors.

ATLANTA – The Small Business Administration opens a Business Recovery Center to assist 11 Georgia counties. Businesses affected by the water main breaks, which occurred from May 31 to June 6, 2024, in 11 Georgia counties, may now apply for low-interest Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL) from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). The SBA will open a Business Recovery Center (BRC) on Monday, July 22, 2024 at 11:00 a.m.
