LAFAYETTE — Rossville pitcher Avery Layton checked off a row of boxes en route to helping the Hornets' clinch their first IHSAA softball championship in state history.

Layton can now add Journal & Courier Spring Highlight of 2024 after her being voted J&C Small Schools Softball Player of the Year in June.

Layton earned the acclaim after she tossed a nine pitch immaculate inning during the first round of sectional playoffs against Tri-County.

Her rare achievement was the most voted on highlight of nine plays Journal & Courier readers could choose from and received 7,713 votes (42.9% of tallies).
