    Suspected driver arrested after 49-year-old Roswell pedestrian dies

    ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) – A New Mexico man has been accused of killing someone while driving intoxicated. The incident happened in downtown Roswell.

    The Roswell Police Department (RPD) said there was a fatal pedestrian crash on Sunday. They stated Nancy Caro-Chavez, 49, Roswell, was hit by an SUV heading north in the 500 block of South Main Street when she was trying to cross the road around 9:10 a.m. Caro-Chavez died at the scene.

    The SUV was noticed two miles north of the crash site by police officers. A traffic stop was made in the 2100 block of North Main Street.

    RPD identified the driver as Santiago Hernandez, 25, of Roswell. He was given field sobriety tests along with a breathalyzer test. He was determined to be intoxicated.

    Caro-Chavez was booked into the Chaves County Detention Center and charged with homicide by vehicle, aggravated DWI, reckless driving, and driving without a license. Authorities are still investigating, and an autopsy is planned.
