Smoke Rise resident Dan Ayers thinks that the ’80s is the best era in modern history as far as books, music and culture, so he’s channeling his love for that era for a good cause.

    And he needs you.

Ayers, who is the chair of the Urban Clinic of Atlanta , Fulton County’s only free primary care clinic, is having a fundraiser at his home on Saturday, Aug. 24, with all things ‘80s, complete with lava lamps, movie posters from that era, and a 1980s-themed trivia contest.

While the disco balls, “Goonies” posters, and scrunchies are in place, he’s hoping for one more crowning touch, some 1980s-era cars parked in front of his house. Ayers already has a commitment from one person who owns a 1981 Toyota Corolla, but as far as he’s concerned, the more the merrier.

“We wanted to go as ‘80s as possible,” Ayers said, “I just started thinking what would be cool would be if people pulled up and saw some classic cars from that era.”

He is hoping to raise $2,000 on Saturday for the Urban Clinic, which opened in 2016 as a volunteer project housed at an Urban Recipe Food Co-op location in Grant Park.

“The free clinic has grown from a volunteer-operated program to a nurse-managed team of 10 part-time employees and more than 30 volunteers,” the Urban Clinic website said. “UCA continues to be the only non-profit clinic in Fulton County providing 100% free primary care services for uninsured and low-income adults.”

Through partnerships with local hospitals, including Northside, patients are able to get free tests, medication, and other necessities to maintain their health.

According to a Urban Clinic social media post, its service reach in July included 549 lab draws, 94 medications, 46 specialty referrals, 122 unique patients, 157 office visits, and 228 patient encounters.

Ayers said he hopes to raise about $2,000 at his throwback party, money that will go towards expanding the program offerings further. The next goal of the organization, he said, is to be able to offer dental care to its clients.

For those who want to help the Urban Clinic in another capacity, organizers are gearing up for Oct. 27th’s Hops for Health, which will be held at Halfway Crooks Biergarten on Reed Street. Tickets are $75 each and can be purchased online.

P.S. Ayers said if anyone has a rad car that’s available on Saturday, contact him . It would be a bodacious addition to a totally tubular party.
