GENESEE TWP., Mich. (WNEM) - A Vietnam veteran and his dog died in a house fire early Thursday morning in Genesee Township. Fire crews were called to the 1000 block of Clovis Avenue for a report of a structure fire with entrapment shortly before 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 18.
George A. Bowen, Jr.
Galeton, Pa. — George A. Bowen, Jr., 85, of Galeton, Pa. died Tuesday, July 16, 2024 in his home. Born Sept. 30, 1938 in Blossburg, he was the son of George A. and Hilma M. Hakes Bowen. The family resided in Wellsboro and Spring City, and in 1945 moved to Galeton, where his parents established the Bow Inn. The Bow Inn started out selling gasoline and a snack bar, like the modern mini mart, eventually adding a motel, which they operated for many years.

ST. BONAVENTURE — For 50 years, St. Bonaventure University’s student-run Warming House has been addressing food insecurity in the Olean area. In recognition of the golden anniversary of the Olean soup kitchen, the university is striving to ensure the Warming House is around for at least another 50 years.

A GoFundMe effort is underway to assist a Knapp Creek couple who lost their house after a pickup truck smashed into their living room Monday. Family members of John “Bull” and Tiffany Miller, on the GoFundMe page, indicate the structural integrity of the house was destroyed and the husband and wife were instructed by emergency response personnel to grab a few belongings and evacuate their home on Route 16.

More than two years after ending his collegiate career, Jalen Adaway could be credited with an assist for the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team. It was Adaway, in fact, who first put the Bonnies into the mind of Jonah Hinton. Hinton, now a redshirt sophomore for Bona after transferring from Panola, a junior college in Texas, had a connection with Adaway through trainer Sam Franklin’s summer runs.
Oilers Sweep Doubleheader Against Genesee Rapids
HOUGHTON, NY — The Olean Oilers swept a doubleheader against the Genesee Rapids Wednesday. Back-to-back four-run innings propelled the Oilers to a 9-7 win in Game 1. The Oilers loaded the bases early in both the fifth and sixth innings. Two infield singles, a walk and a hit batter brought four runs to tie the game 5-5 in the fifth. The Rapids retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning by scoring one run. The Oilers again loaded the bases in the top of the sixth inning, and right fielder Michael Norton hit his first grand slam of the season.

13 students receive Gregory D. Spring Perseverance Scholarship
Thirteen recent area graduates recently received the Gregory D. Spring Perseverance Scholarship, an annual scholarship managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation. Colton Boser, Gracie Amore, Kevin Edwards-Hardy and Robert Casey, all of Allegany-Limestone Central School; as well as Portville’s Shaela Spring, Hailey Studley and Dayton Shaw all received awards this year.
Otto-Eldred Hometown Days return Friday
DUKE CENTER, Pa. — The Otto-Eldred area’s beloved summer festival comes home this weekend, as Hometown Days kick off with a parade along Sweitzer Drive at 5 p.m. Friday. In addition to food and craft vendors set up around the park and inflatables for the kids on the tee ball field, there will be live music on the UPMC Stage starting with Ten Pound Hammer from 5 to 7 p.m. and followed by headliner Marshmellow Overcoat from 7:30 until close at 10:30.
Police reports 7/18/24
Tuesday, 8 a.m., no injuries were reported following a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of the Interstate 86 off-ramp and Route 16. A vehicle operated by Adam P. Gerbracht, 26, of Elma, reportedly struck the rear of a vehicle operated by Jenny M. Bilotta, 42, of Cuba, which was stopped at a stop sign. Gerbracht was subsequently cited for following too closely, an infraction.
Oilers show some needed grit in DH sweep of Genesee
For much of this month, the Oilers’ best moments were more inclined to happen off the field than on it. Olean staged a Fourth of July extravaganza, following up its holiday contest with food trucks, a live band and fireworks display. With the help of its fans, it raised over $600 for Mercy Flight on First Responders Day.
October trial set in Ramos murder case in Potter County
COUDERSPORT, Pa. — A trial in October has been scheduled for two women charged in the 2020 torture and murder of Joshua Ramos, 19, in Potter County. Krysten Lauren Crosby, 25, of Tioga, and Felicia Cary, 38, of Galeton, both face the death penalty in the trial slated for Oct. 7 to 18. The cases have been joined for trial.
