AUSTIN (KXAN) — Seventeen-year-old Ricky Thompson III, the first suspect arrested in last month’s deadly shooting at a Round Rock Juneteenth celebration , is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

Two women, both innocent bystanders, died in that shooting. Fourteen others were injured.

The courts told KXAN Thompson’s hearing will be brief. He faces a deadly conduct charge.

Police have arrested two others in connection with the shooting as well: 18-year-old Keshawn Dixon, who also faces a charge of deadly conduct, and a juvenile.

The Round Rock Police Department said the investigation is still ongoing.

A 9-year-old boy was one of the innocent people shot at Round Rock’s Juneteenth celebration.

“He ended up with a pretty deep graze,” Lawrence Meriwether said about his young grandson. “I got the call from my daughter screaming so loud I didn’t know what to think.”

The child needed several stitches and now undergoes regular counseling.

“Things are getting better, but of course he was traumatized,” Meriwether said. “Waking up in the middle of the night, crying, looking out the window, thinking someone was coming to get him.”

The boy is going to be OK, but the family is navigating a new normal.

“My wife, my mom, we all gather round and pray and stuff like that,” Meriwether said, adding that his church family has offered significant support as well. “We haven’t seen the bills yet, but I’m sure they’ll be coming, I don’t know how we’ll deal with those just yet.”

    Help for the victims

“It can be a nightmare for the individual person, they’re already in an extremely emotional state,” said Amber Russell, a personal injury attorney and founder of LOAR PLLC.

How to help the victims of the Juneteenth Round Rock shooting

She’s not representing any of the victims in this case, but KXAN spoke with her about the financial resources available for victims of violent crime. She said nothing exists in the health insurance sphere to help these individuals pay for medical bills upfront.

“It’s going to go through the normal process or you’re going to get asked to pay a deductible, copay, or coinsurance. Again, it’s going to be on that individual person to make that payment And then try to find a source of recovery later,” Russell said.

She noted that the state has a crime victims’ compensation fund , but that doesn’t pay out until after the fact as well.
