SALISBURY — Deputies are investigating after a man reported that his car was shot into multiple times after he tried to avoid a car stopped in the middle of the road.

Deputies were initially called at approximately 4:30 a.m. to the area of the intersection of Melchor Road and St. Stephen’s Church Road in reference to shots being fired, said Captain Mark McDaniel, public information officer for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.

They found the caller in the parking lot of Gold Hill United Methodist Church, where he showed the deputies two bullet holes in the front driver’s side door and one hole in the rear driver’s side door. Deputies reportedly searched the car and found that one of the bullets had traveled through the entire vehicle, leaving a hole in the passenger’s side door, and a slug had landed in the floor of the vehicle.

The man told the deputies that the shooting had occurred in the area of the intersection when he noticed a gold Ford Taurus parked in a way that completely blocked the road, said McDaniel. When the man attempted to drive around the car, which he said appeared to be empty, on the left side of the road he heard multiple shots ring out and then the bullets hit the vehicle.

McDaniel said that deputies were continuing to investigate the incident.
