ROXBURY, NJ – A Rotary "wheel" with a plaque honoring Roxbury Rotary Club Member Don Schuld was installed today at Conkling Pond in Ledgewood, a place that's been spruced up thanks to Schuld's initiative.

Rotarians gathered at the park for the afternoon event and seemed pleased with the way the bright yellow and dark blue symbol of Rotary International looked in front of a newly planted tree and behind some also new flowers.

The club, at its May 23 raffle night in Succasunna, surprised the 84-year-old Schuld by announcing its plan to put his name on a plaque attached to the refurbished wheel and install it at the site on Mooney Mountain.

At the time, Rotarian Steve Alford said similar honorary installations usually take place after the honored individual dies. He said the club wanted to thank Schuld now so he could "get to see it."

Schuld, a Rotarian for about 48 years, came up with the idea to revitalize Conkling Pond's surroundings because he lives nearby and became frustrated with the overgrowth and general lack of upkeep at the place, situated at the corner of Mooney Road and Kennedy Road.

At today's event, Schuld said the revitalization of the area might have been his idea, but it couldn't have been done without a lot of work by his fellow members and the use of equipment owned by members Jaymie Gulick Gulick, Tom Peach and Scott Fullerton.

"Were it not for having those people in the Rotary Club, this project would have been physically impossible," he said.

Although the site has come a long way since the club began the revitalization two years ago, Schuld said more work is on the agenda. "We have more to do," he said, pointing to an unfinished rock wall. "We've gotten so many, many comments from people walking by saying, 'Thank you so much for beautifying the area,' and it's a pleasure always as I drive by to see people sitting in the evening and enjoying the pond. So its helped improve Roxbury's history a little bit."
