Worthy Coffee Co. is looking to give back to nurses at Yelm Community Schools in a big way this spring, as the Roy-based coffee shop is hosting a hygiene drive to donate to each health room in the district.
Until May 31, Worthy Coffee Co. is asking community members to donate toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, body wash, body wipes, size six and seven pull-ups, latex- and allergy-free gloves, pads, lip balm, alcohol wipes, shampoo and conditioner, small brushes and combs, Clorox wipes, baby wipes, granola bars, single-pack Goldfish crackers and protein bars.
All items can be donated at Worthy Coffee Co., 9111 346th St. S. Owner Brandi Worthy said she feels it is important to give back to local schools, especially after the recent levy failure.
“ I knew the levy hadn’t passed, and there were harsh feelings and sadness,” Worthy said. “I want to also show Yelm Community Schools that there are people that still love them and support them. The community is here to help, even if it didn’t maybe feel like it at the time with the levy.”
Worthy Coffee Co. has participated in numerous community events like the hygiene drive, including in January when it hosted a dog food drive. This time around, Worthy learned of the need for hygienic supplies at schools in the district through a Facebook post.
“I have a friend who has posted — she’s a nurse at one of the elementary schools — a list of some of the things she’s in need of. She thought if anybody else wanted to pitch in, that’d be great,” Worthy said. “It really caught my heart because I remember when I was a little girl. We didn’t grow up with a lot of stuff either, and there were certain times where I’d go to the nurse when I needed something.”
Prior to reaching the halfway point of the hygiene drive, Worthy said the community has so far done its part. Aside from donations, many Worthy Coffee Co.’s customers have spread the word or shopped for the items to donate.
“So far, we have two full bins, but we’re hoping to get even more than that. We still have a while. I’m going to get ahold of all the nurses and have them come in here to take what they all need,” Worthy said. “I know that there’s a lot of other needs, too. This was just one need that I saw. There’s probably going to be other things that we’re going to do, too. I don’t exactly know what else they’re in need of, but I am always a supporter of Yelm schools. They can always come to me with what’s next.”
Worthy feels it’s a big responsibility to give back to the local community but is more than happy to use her platform to do so.
“We’re here to support the community. If there’s ever an idea that someone has where they can use the Worthy Coffee platform to benefit the community somehow, we’re totally open to that, too,” Worthy said. “We have a platform to bring the community together, so whatever we can do to help.”
